Duno, Wallace Rely on Experience at Laguna Seca
CITGO Racing Team has high hopes at historic track
Denver, NC (April 28, 2005) -- The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will make their first ever appearance at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca (CA) this weekend for the U.S. Sports Car Invitational. However, it will not be the first race at this historic raceway for the co-drivers of the #2 CITGO Pontiac Crawford. Both Andy Wallace and Milka Duno have raced on the famed road course and know the way to victory lane.
"I've had some great races there and perhaps will have a slight advantage in that I have raced there six times in the last ten years," Wallace stated. "I've been fortunate to score two second place overall finishes, including one win in the GT Class, at Laguna (Seca)."
"The layout of the track is great from a driver and spectator point of view," Wallace continued. "But, it's very slippery, so car set-up will be very important. We have been working very hard as usual to make sure we're in good shape."
Teammate Duno also has a win at Laguna Seca. "I've raced at Laguna Seca a few times. The last time was in 2001, and I won an American Le Mans Series race there in the Le Mans Prototype 675 class -- now the LMP 2 class. It is such a great track and the 'corkscrew' is world famous."
"Since this will be the debut of the Daytona Prototypes at this circuit, all the teams will be working on a 'Laguna Seca' set-up for the first time," Duno added. "The CITGO Howard-Boss Team is very good at new set-ups and both myself and Andy (Wallace) will be working very hard with them. I know that Andy has raced at Laguna before too, so hopefully our prior experience at the track will help dial the car in quicker."
The U.S. Sports Car Invitational at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be the fourth race on the 2005 Rolex Series schedule. Both Wallace (third) and Duno (ninth) enter the event in the top ten in overall points, with their Howard-Boss Motorsports Team currently third in owner points. Coming off their first top-five finish of the season at Fontana (fourth), Wallace and Duno certainly have high hopes for their first win of the season this weekend.
"The area is nice and the track is challenging," Wallace concluded. "I think the DP (Daytona Prototype) cars will have a really close race as it's a quite narrow course. I really like Laguna Seca and am looking forward to it!"
The U.S. Sports Car Invitational at Laguna Seca is set for a 3 p.m. ET start on Sunday, May 1st. The race will be televised live by the Speed Channel.
