Michael Shank Racing shows strength in Homestead testing
Daytona 24 front row team keeps the pace as Rolex Series tests at Homestead
(Homestead, FL) 27 February 08 --Just a month after an outstanding Rolex 24 race outing, Michael Shank Racing continued to show impressive speed this week as the Rolex Sports Car Series gathered for an open test at Homestead Miami Speedway on Monday and Tuesday.
Both Michael Shank Racing Daytona Prototype entries-the No. 6 of John Pew and Ian James as well as the No. 60 of Mark Patterson and Daytona pole-sitter Oswaldo Negri-were in action during the open two-day test on the oval-based road course which will be the site of round two for the 2008 season. While Grand-Am does not publish official times from the open tests, the series did report that Negri was fastest on both days of the test in the No. 60 Ford-Riley combination, with the No. 6 close behind through all the sessions.
"Our philosophy is that there are so many top notch teams here in the Rolex Series that you cannot blink," Negri said. "That's what I told my engineer, 'if we keep doing the ordinary, we're going to be ordinary. Let's do whatever it takes to go get ahead of those guys.' Last year, I would say, we were not up to speed with those guys. I do feel that the Pirelli Tires are helping me a lot. We can't underestimate anyone here and we'll just keep working hard with all of the Michael Shank Racing team."
Michael Shank Racing continues to build on a new relationship with motor partner Roush-Yates after switching to Ford power in the off-season. The team was also the first two-car squad to make the switch to the new Riley XX bodywork, and put the package to excellent use in the Rolex 24 with a new track record and both cars on the front row, and will look to continue to push the envelope of what the combination is capable of.
"This kind of test with these results is exactly why we made the commitment to this package so early," said team owner Mike Shank. "We wanted to get out ahead of that curve. We know we have to keep pushing to find every possible advantage that working with Ford and this new Riley can provide because everyone is going full-speed chasing our times, so there is absolutely no sitting still at this point. But it's obviously really encouraging to be in this position and we are anxious to get back to racing and convert this into some really good results."
