Corvettes Quick in Friday Practice

LEXINGTON, OHIO (Friday, June 08, 2001) - The Corvettes of Powell Motorsports and Phoenix American Motorsports took turns leading the pack in morning and afternoon practice sessions today in preparation for Sunday's Grand-Am Cup final at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, with the Phoenix Pontiac-Buick-GMC-sponsored #32 driven by Tony Bartone, John Yarosz and John Heinricy setting the quickest time in the afternoon at 1:33.255 with an average speed of 87.187 mph.

But that mark was only barely better than the time posted by the #36 Phoenix American Vette driven by Heinricy and Jeff Altenberg (1:33.729/86.899) and in the morning by the Sunoco/Encompass-sponsored #11 Powell Motorsports entry (1:33.903/86.566) driven by Devan Powell and Doug Goad. The Powell Motorsports car came in third in the afternoon just a few ticks slower.

A complete sweep by the Corvettes was broken up by the Motorsports Technologies-sponsored #08 Firefly Racing Porsche 996 Supercup (1:35.504/85.115) with Trip Goolsby and Dave Russell sharing driving duties. Another Corvette rounded out the top five with Stu Hayner and Mike Weinberg piloting the Mallett Cars-sponsored #98 MTI Racing entry (1:36.122/84.562).

The top GS car led that pack in the morning and afternoon sessions with the Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Kikse Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #70 Speedsource Porsche 911 netting its quickest time in the morning at 1:38.057/82.899 mph with David Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay sharing the wheel.

The Sport Touring class saw one car set the pace in both sessions. The MAI/www.tiretrack.com/Pro-Cam/RedLine Oil-sponsored #64 King Motorsports Acura Integra R put in its best time in the morning session with a 1:39.852/81.408. Mike Van Sicklen and Bob Endicott do the driving in the King Acura.

The Compact 2000 class had one maker, but two different teams, two different brands and two different models leading the field in morning and afternoon sessions. The morning was led by the Honda of America/Redline Oil/DC Sports-sponsored #69 Honda of America Racing Team Honda Civic Si at 1:42.928/78.976 with drivers Bryan Johnson and Pete Halsmer. Running just a bit slower, but ahead of the rest of the Compact field in the afternoon, was the CompTech Sport-sponsored #41 Planet Earth Motorsports Acura Integra GSR driven by Wayne and Will Nonamaker and Mike Fitzgerald.

The Grand-Am Cup cars will qualify at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with the weekend's final set for a 9:30 a.m. start on Sunday.
