PRUETT, ROJAS PUT LEXUS ON TOP OF GRAND-AM CHARTS IN MONTREAL PRACTICE
TORRANCE, Calif. (July 31, 2008) -- Scott Pruett registered the fastest time in today's practice sessions in preparation for Friday's Rolex Sports Car Series race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Pruett's teammate in the #01 Telmex Lexus, Memo Rojas, notched the second-fastest time overall.
Pruett's best lap of 1:34.250 was almost a half-second faster than any other car in the field, and .130 seconds faster than Rojas. Both Lexus drivers were more than a half-second faster than the existing track record set a year ago.
The Chip Ganassi Racing duo have won six of the season's first nine races and hold a 60-point lead in the championship standings with just five races remaining on the 2008 schedule. They can wrap up the title simply by placing seventh or better in each of the season's final five contests regardless of where its opponents finish. Those results would give Pruett his second Rolex Series title and a record eighth major U.S. sports car racing championship, while it would be the first series championship for Rojas.
The #3 Southard Motorsports Lexus also will go into F riday's activities on a high note after registering the ninth-fastest time in Thursday's final practice with Shane Lewis and Bill Lester behind the wheel. The duo is coming off a ninth-place finish at Barber Motorsports Park.
NOTABLE:
- Lexus' first-ever Daytona Prototype win came in Quebec at Mont Tremblant in 2004 with Scott Pruett and Max Papis driving.
- With a victory this weekend, Lexus would match its previous high total for wins in a season with seven, set in 2006 -- the last time Lexus won the series manufacturer's championship.
