Papis Shatters Rolex Qualifying Record at Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 9, 2004) -- Max Papis will lead the field of the Food City 250 for the Rolex Sports Car Series to the green flag Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier for the Daytona Prototype class, the fastest class in the Rolex Series.

Papis, who lives in Miami Beach, qualified the pole-sitting car with a record-smashing lap of 56.005 seconds. Papis bettered the existing mark by more than a second. The PIR road course incorporates parts of the famed one-mile oval familiar to stock car and Indy car racing fans and winds through the infield to make a 1.51-mile track.

Papis will co-drive the car with veteran road racer Scott Pruett. Luis Diaz qualified the other Ganassi car second and will co-drive that car with Jimmy Morales. Diaz and Morales are both from Mexico City. Oswaldo Negri, of Aventura, Florida, qualified his Lexus Doran third and will co-drive the car with Burt Frisselle. Frisselle lives in Kihei, Hawaii.

The field of 44 cars is scheduled to take the green flag at 6 p.m. local time Saturday. The field includes the largest gathering of Daytona Prototypes in history, 19.

"It's almost as if every corner will be a lottery," Negri said of the big field. Qualifying began as the heat of the Arizona desert still warmed the facility. Goodyear engineers said the temperature of the track surface was 111 degrees as the session began.

Negri, who lives in Florida, said he was pleased with the way his tire package helped his car perform.

"It was the first time I used the soft (tread) compound and it was very, very good," Negri said. "I was extremely pleased with the balance. I could push as hard as I wanted."

The race will be broadcast live by SPEED Channel, starting at 6 p.m., local time.
