Orlando, Fla. (13 August 2013) – Since debuting in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series in 2010, Luis Bacardi’s Rum Bum Racing has had the opportunity to race on 15 different racetracks around the country. The Rum Bum squad will add yet another venue to that list this weekend as GRAND-AM stages its first race at Kansas Speedway. Drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi will look to get up to speed quickly as they take their first laps around the 2.37-mile “roval” circuit.
The team is fresh off of a dramatic victory just days ago at Road America in which a gamble on fuel strategy saw the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Porsche take the win on fumes in front of a large crowd of Rum Bum fans. The car ran out of fuel on the cool down lap and had to receive a push from the Rum Bum crew in order to make its trip to victory lane.
“We went into the Road America event with the points lead and we just wanted to be conservative and make sure we came away with as many points as possible,” said Plumb, who celebrated the win with Luis and Jennifer Bacardi as well as a contingent of Rum Bum fans in victory circle. “On our last pit stop, the team told me to really conserve fuel because we were going to stretch it out. I do what I’m told knowing that they’re a good group and they know what they’re doing. There is always a lot of trust that what they say is going to work so I did what I was told. We didn’t expect to win, we didn’t even necessarily need to be in the top-five, we just needed to finish and do well or at least finish ahead of the car second in the championship. The Rum Bum guys are something special - all the credit goes to them.”The Road America win extended Rum Bum Racing’s championship lead to a 54-point advantage and the group will look to capitalize on its winning momentum with another strong outing at Kansas this weekend.
The challenging new circuit features six tight, low-speed corners in addition to a large portion of the high-speed banked oval which is sure to provide some exciting racing as the highly competitive CTSCC field makes its Kansas debut.
“When we race at Kansas it’ll be the first time we’ve laid eyes on the place,” said Longhi. "It’s going to be really challenging. It’s going to be totally new for us and for the team. I think we’ll have a lot of wheel to wheel racing so again for us it’s just going to be about keeping the car clean and scoring points. We just need to make sure we do everything we can in order to maintain the championship lead.”
