Grand-Am Cup Series Awards Celebration Set for Saturday Night After Virginia Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 22, 2005) -- The 2005 Grand-Am Cup Series Awards Celebration will be held Saturday, October 8, at the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va., following that day's season-ending Grand-Am Cup 200 race.

As was the case with last year's celebration at California Speedway, the Grand-Am Cup Series Awards Celebration at VIR will be held inside the same pavilion which houses the Sahlen's Paddock Club. All series teams, drivers, sponsors and officials are invited to attend as guests of Grand American. The evening begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by an awards presentation that will honor the champions of this year's Grand-Am Cup Series.

The evening will be highlighted by a presentation of the respective championship awards to the first-place driver and manufacturers in both the Grand Sport (GS) and Sport Touring (ST) categories as well as the winning team owners in each class. With races at Mid-Ohio (August 28) and Phoenix (September 9-10) before the final stop in Virginia, the championships in both classes are far from decided.

No. 05 Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT driver David Empringham holds a 23-point lead over No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 driver Justin Marks in the overall GS standings (232-207). With top-five finishes in all eight races this season--including four victories--Ford leads the manufacturer standings over BMW by five points (260-255). Multimatic Motorsports finds itself first and third in the GS team standings, with the No. 05 Mustang GT leading (214) and the No. 55 Mustang GT third (201). The No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 team moved into second with 207 points after a victory at Trois-Rivieres one race ago.

In ST, just two points separate No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 co-drivers David Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay (202-200). Will Turner and Don Salama, co-driving the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i are in a tie for third with 189 class points. Mazda sits atop the ST manufacturer standings with 225 points, 18 points better than BMW. SpeedSource leads the team standings with their No. 70 Mazda RX-8 by 32 points over the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i team (202-170).

No RSVPs are necessary for the Grand-Am Cup Awards Celebration and guests need only show their Grand American competitors license or a proper event credential for admission. Media interested in attending the celebration may contact the Grand American communications department.
