Turner Motorsport's Bill Auberlen held off the Ford Mustangs of Hugh Plumb and Ken Wilden in the closing laps of Friday's Fresh from Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway to win the first Koni Challenge race of 2009.
Auberlen passed both Mustangs with less than 10 minutes remaining in the three-hour race, which ended under yellow due to a crash on Daytona's long back straight away. Auberlen's BMW M3 Coupe took the checkered flag under the caution, with Plumb finishing second and Wilden coming home third. Plumb shared his Mustang with Jack Roush, Jr., while Wilden shared his Ford with Dean Martin.
"This is one of those races where I was actually smiling while I was in the car," said Auberlen, who shared the driving duties in the race with Matthew Bell.
The Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt SS of Lawson Aschenbach and Pat Iannucci prevailed in the Street Tuner class despite having started 56th in the in 67-car field.
"That was one of the most incredible races I have ever driven," said Aschenbach. "Everybody was beating and banging the whole race. It was crazy out there."
Andrew Aquilante and Kristian Skavnes ended up second in the No. 111 Subaru Road Racing Team Subaru Legacy, followed by the No. 76 Compass360 Racing Honda Civic SI driven by Matt Pritiko and Travis Walker.
