Automatic Racing: Double Duty in 2005

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Automatic Racing is returning to the Grand Sports class of the Grand-Am Cup Series in 2005, ready to race for the championship with a pair of BMW E46 M3's.

Jep Thornton and David Russell will be co-driving the No. 09 Automatic Racing BMW for their third full season together. They will be aiming for their first race win and the GS championship as they build on their past success.

Automatic Racing has announced that they will also be campaigning the No. 90 E46 M3 with drivers Kris Wilson and Dave Riddle. The two co-drove in the Grand-Am Cup Series last year, and are looking forward to being teammates once again. Russell and Wilson are both instructors for the Skip Barber Racing School, and their acquaintance led to Wilson's introduction to Automatic Racing.

Always easy for the fans to spot, the No. 09 BMW will remain painted electric yellow, and the No. 90 car will be just as vivid with its day-glow green livery.

All four drivers got seat time during Test Days at Daytona International Speedway from January 7-9. Automatic Racing was consistently one of the fastest teams on track, and Wilson posted the quickest time of one test session on the final day.

"We're still making some changes, trying to make the overall package better. We made a couple of changes that made the car a lot better mid-corner. It was a good weekend," commented Russell.

"The car is great. I'm giddy because driving with these guys is such a great opportunity," said Wilson, who will be racing a BMW for the first time. "I can't wait to get the season underway. The crew is so supportive. Sometimes you're lucky enough to get on a team where everyone is behind it- that's how Automatic is. These guys are one-hundred percent focused on making us go faster."

Riddle added that he "really loved the car. It handles great and is really put together well. I'm looking forward to driving with Automatic this year; the chemistry seems really good."

Wilson and Riddle met when Riddle attended the Skip Barber Racing School in 2002, where Wilson was one of his instructors. The two worked well together and decided to team up for Grand-Am Cup competition. "Kris has a great deal of experience and knows a lot about setup. We can compare data, so I have something to look at and see where I can go faster," said Riddle.

Automatic Racing will have one more test day before the 2005 season begins with the Daytona 200 on Friday, February 4.

Automatic Racing is sponsored by Automatic LLC, LandAir, Engine Studios, Lynch Imports, Moton Shocks and Fikse Wheels.
