Maxwell Edges Powell in Qualifying for Daytona Season Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 31, 2002) -- Scott Maxwell, of Toronto, edged out 2001 co-driver champion Devon Powell to earn the pole position for Friday's season opening Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series race at Daytona International Speedway. Maxwell piloted the #76 Porsche GT3 Cup of Doncaster Racing to a 2:02.511 lap at 104.611 mph, only 0.032 mph faster than Powell's time in the Powell Motorsports #11 Corvette.

A pair of G&W Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup cars will start side-by-side on the second row, with Darren Law qualifying third in the #01 and Brent Martini starting the #81 car in the fourth position.

SpeedSource returned to its dominant form by capturing both the Grand Sport II and Sport Touring I class pole positions. Team owner and 2001 driver champion Sylvain Tremblay piloted his #63 Porsche 911 to the front of the GS II class. His 2:09.691 lap earned him the 12th-place position on Friday afternoon's starting grid. His teammate David Haskell took the #67 Porsche Boxster to the front of the ST I class with a 93.633 mph lap.

Schreiner Racing's #30 Mustang Cobra R recorded the second-quickest time in the GS II class with team owner John Schreiner behind the wheel, while Mike Keravich had the second-fastest time in the ST I class in the Acura Integra R of Power Racing Team.

Team owner Bill Fenton piloted his Acura Integra R to a 2:28.177 lap time to lead the Sport Touring I class. Another team owner - Dennis Baglier - also took to the track during qualifying, clocking the second-fastest ST II time in his Mazda Protégé.
