Eric Curran Debuts New Turbocharged GrandAm Koni ST Chevy Cobalt SS at Daytona Tests
Winning Chevy driver adapts to Georgian Bay-prepared Turbo Cobalt for 2008 after delivering six wins with Supercharged Cobalt in '06 & '07
"My first test in 20008 with the new Georgian Bay Chevrolet Cobalt SS couldn't have gone better," noted Koni Challenge and Rolex GT driver Eric Curran. Curran, one of the most sought after drivers in the GrandAm series, worked to develop the new engine package in the familiar Cobalt SS he's driven into victory circle six times in the past two years.
"We started the Daytona test weekend with a brand new Cobalt SS sporting a Turbocharger instead of a Supercharger. The car was great right from the first session, though struggling with the extra 200 pounds of weight Grand Am added to our car to make sure we didn't leave the competition behind will be a challenge."
Curran's team has grown in profile and stature with their successful General Motors touring car machines. "The usual Georgian Bay built quality and the reliability of the Cobalt gave us a strong debut weekend without missing a beat. That's what the name 'Georgian Bay' has come to stand for. We started the weekend being 5th fastest right out of the box on Friday; this was a new car that had never turned a wheel. By Saturday afternoon I was 4th quickest and the car was feeling like it had more room to improve."
As has been a familiar routine, Curran and the Georgian Bay team continued to work the car into faster and faster form as the test progressed. "We made a few adjustments to the '01' car for Sunday and by the end of the day I was 2nd quick. I also tested the two year old '00' Georgian Bay sister car that produced a lap time that stood as 4th fastest of the weekend. There's nothing better than walking away from a test with both cars so well tuned and prepared for the first race on the calendar."
With the usual concerns of debuting a new car just weeks before the season opens, Curran and company were overjoyed at the potential the Turbo Cobalt SS displayed for their upcoming Koni Challenge campaign. "Overall, the folks at GM are very happy with the results of the test and the Georgian Bay guys are also very happy. This year is going to be tough with the competition we face and the extra weight we're saddled with, but I'm looking forward to a great championship run with my teammate Jamie Holtom in the '01' Chevrolet Cobalt SS. Expect us to give everything we have on every lap of every race."
Daytona 24 Hour event activities kick off for Eric Curran and the Georgian Bay team Thursday, January 24th.
