Now Gator Mitchell is honoring Scott's memory even further by racing for deserving students through the University of Florida's Scott Mitchell Memorial Football Endowment Fund.
Through the generous support of Gator Mitchell's corporate partner - Orangefield Citrus, $5 per lap completed by the #43 Florida OJ Acura Integra in Sunday's Grand Am Cup will be donated. Plus, if Gator's car wins the Compact Class race, a $1000 bonus will be endowed.
THE MITCHELL FAMILY ESTABLISHED THE FUND after Scott's murder on May 16, 1994. At the time, Scott was checking a parcel of the family's citrus grove property, when he apparently came upon one or more individuals stripping a stolen car. Scott was shot and killed, prosecutors believe, so that he could not identify the suspects.
Almost exactly four years later, on May 7, 1998, one man was found guilty of first-degree murder, and in October of that year, he was sentenced to the electric chair. Scott, 31 was the youngest son of a well-known Bartow, Florida -- citrus family -- who decided to make their grief an action word. Told by District Attorneys that education is the best way to stop crime, the Mitchell Family decided to establish a perpetual Football scholarship at the University of Florida in Scott's memory.
GATOR's 2001 RACE SEASON will get a fresh start at Watkins Glen on May 20th. He will be competing in the Compact Class in the #43 Florida OJ Acura Integra. Gator is very excited about his new ride since this same exact car set fastest race lap and finished 3rd at the recent Phoenix event. His season will continue at the next race at Mid-Ohio and two more TBD Grand Am Cup events.
