SpeedSource Race Engineering Homestead Race Review; Three Top 10s

Miami, FL - A strong performance at Homestead Miami Speedway saw the SpeedSource Race Engineering effort score three top tens at their home track. Their fleet of four Mazda RX-8s took the green flag for the three hour race with twenty cars in the hotly contested Sport Touring class of the Grand Am Cup Series.

The top finishing car for the team was the sixth place finish recorded by Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell in the #70 Mazdaspeed Motorsport Development Mazda RX-8. The Homestead Miami Speedway race was the second round of the year for the Grand Am Cup Series. The team's sixth place finish matches their best finish at the season opener at Daytona.

"With two sixth place finishes we have definitely kept Mazda in the hunt for the Sport Touring Manufacturer's title," commented Tremblay. "This car is such a strong platform. We were at the top of the time sheets all weekend long. Three top tens is a great performance for this car's second race."

With a seventh place finish Marcello Abello moved into the top ten in the Driver's Championship. Abello shared the #66 International Jet Traders / Gulfstream Brazil Mazda RX-8 with Benoit Theetge.

Taking SpeedSource's third top ten of the weekend was David Tuaty and Scott Schlesinger with an eighth place finish in the #68 Ollieair.com / GMD Mortgage Services Mazda RX-8. Schlesinger and Tuaty, both from Florida, now sit eighth in the point standings only thirteen behind the class leader.

Just missing out on the top ten this weekend was the #67 Discount Rental Mazda RX-8. Rich Walker and Nick Fanelli, also both from Florida, scored an eleventh place finish out of the twenty Sport Touring starters.

"We had a six hour test day on Friday at Homestead," commented David Haskell. "The car was so strong coming into the day that there was little we had to play with. We made some fine tuning adjustments to the car for Homestead and we tried a few different things to see how the car reacted. This car responds to tuning very well and as a shock engineer and driver, you really appreciate that."

SpeedSource will return to action at Phoenix International Raceway on April 9-10. The team will race their fleet of four Mazda RX-8s in the Grand Am Cup Sport Touring race on Saturday and will run their two car Multimatic Ford Daytona Prototype effort on Saturday in the Grand American Rolex Series. The Phoenix Rolex race will air live on Speed Channel at 9:00 PM (EST) on April 10th. The Phoenix Grand Am Cup race will air at 6:00 PM (EST) on April 18th.

In addition to MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, the team is also working with Sparco USA, Hawk Brakes, Dynamic Suspension, and Racing Hart Wheels on its 2004 Grand-Am Cup RX-8 program.
