This Week in Ford Racing
Hugh Plumb, co-driver of the No. 60 Rehagen Racing Ford Mustang FR500C, is seventh in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge series standings heading into this weekend's race in Trois-Rivieres in Quebec. Plumb has had plenty of success at Trois-Rivieres, totaling three podium finishes.
HUGH PLUMB - No. 60 Rehagen Racing Ford Mustang FR500C
ON THE SEASON SO FAR. "I think as a new team or as a new partnership between myself, Mike [Canney, co-driver] and the whole effort, I think everyone has done a fantastic job right out of the box. Being fastest and nearly winning Daytona, going to Lime Rock and being as good as the Mustangs were going to be there. And then Mosport, being on the podium, we definitely started out strong. We just had a couple of misfortunes with not finishing at Birmingham, getting taken out basically in the first lap, and then going to Iowa, where although there are places for the Mustangs to stretch its legs it really didn't get a chance - just getting up to fourth gear. As a whole, the Mustang was great handling-wise for the bigger car that it is. But we just didn't have anything for the Porsches and BMWs [in Iowa]. So it has been a bit of a rollercoaster season. It's Mike's second year of pro racing so he's definitely on a steep learning curve. But he's very competitive and very willing to move on to be the best that he can be and keep trying to plug along and to move up there to the championship."
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST ADJUSTMENT FOR YOU IN CHANGING OVER TO THE MUSTANG FOR THIS SEASON? "I think that the Mustang being a little bit bigger of a car, little heavier and the roll center being a little bit higher, it's made me change a little bit as far as driving style and how to handle the car mid-corner. The car brakes exceptionally well. I'd say for the most part that it handles very well. It's got great power. It's just from track to track we've got to make bigger than normal adjustments. Finding that sweet spot that the Mustang really likes has been more of a challenge than any other car. So, when you find it, the car is fantastic. But if you're out to lunch a little bit rolling the car off the trailer, you've got work to do.
"Overall, I love driving the car. I'd like to get the chance to drive in this particular car a little bit more, whether it's in the GT car, because I think it's got a ton of potential. I think that we need to test more and we need to develop the car. I think it's got more potential than what we're seeing right now."
YOU'VE HAD SUCCESS AT TROIS-RIVIERES IN THE PAST. IS THAT A TRACK THAT YOU ARE VERY COMFORTABLE AT? "It is. I've won there before and we were third there last year. It's really a survival game as far as conserving the car and conserving the brakes. I think we found a brake package that will last in the Mustang. I think it's going to be good for the Mustangs so we'll just have to see. I think we found something for the more twisty, lower- speed corner aspect and I'm very comfortable there. It'll be good."
