Becker and SRG Prepare for Sunday's GS Race

After a morning practice session and a stint in a pace car giving VIP track ride-arounds KONI Challenge driver, Ernie Becker, was overly prepared for the Saturday morning GS qualifying session. Becker, in the No. 11 Southwest Racers Group BMW M3 turned the 25th quickest lap time in the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca qualifying session.

"I am really happy with the results of the qualifying session. The field was so big and the lap times were so close. I know that we can shave a little more time off the laps for Sunday's race, the car could have gone faster if it was setup a little different for the cold weather," said Becker. The GS cars had a qualifying session under a blanket of fog and cold air.

"The car is getting closer to a perfect setup, Mike and I have been looking at data and learned a lot. We have also both learned a lot from each other, just like when we were teammates in 2005. Our feedback has really helped with the car's setup. The adjustments made on the car have been great so far." Mike Halpin, SRG team owner and diver has been working with Becker all weekend to shave down some of the M3's lap time. Halpin has been impressed with Becker's ability to adjust to the car and keep it out of harm's way.

Halpin has known Becker for years and knew he could rely on his old teammate as a quick shoe in for the last minute race. "We had a driver lined up and ready to go but at the last minute we weren't able to finalize our plans. I always had Becker in the back of my mind and I am happy the way things have worked out."

Becker has been a race car addict since his teenage years and has gained an impressive on track reputation with his driving skills and level headed thinking. When Becker isn't suited up for a stint in the race car, he can be found racing on his road bike and riding over 100 miles a week. After Becker's Saturday morning qualifying session he traded his Hans device for his bicycle helmet and jersey. The Southern California racer joined Rolex drivers and race fans for an hour long charity bike ride on the Laguna Seca track. Proceeds from the ride went to Paul Newman's Campy Boggy Creek and the Laguna Seca Raceway Fund. After the evening's bike ride, Becker shouldn't have any trouble finding the perfect line for Sunday morning's race.
