Buffomante Streaks to Lime Rock Park Pole
LAKEVILLE, CT 28 May 2010 - There is nothing like a little extra motivation, and after leading much of the most recent round of Ford Racing Mustang Challenge racing before falling victim to a small mechanical setback, Tony Buffomante has a bit of a score to settle with racing's Lady Luck. The two-time Mustang Challenge race winner got a good start to those ambitions as he streaked to a second consecutive pole position on Friday at Lime Rock Park with the No. 34 CapaldiRacing.com Ford Mustang FR500S.
His fast lap time of 58.959-seconds on the 1.53-mile circuit was set on his first flying lap, and ended up just . 139 seconds clear of fellow front-row starter Dan Aweida.
"One and done! Sticker BFGoodrich Tires were good. I got it done on the first lap, and that was all she had," said Buffomante. "A big thanks to my dad, Pete, Mike and all the Capaldi guys. Obviously it was a big disappointment what happened at VIR, and the team is very fired up to get us back into the championship and this is a good way to do that."
Aweida, who had a big battle with Buffomante in the 2008 Mustang Challenge race at Lime Rock Park, also set his time early in the session before pulling int to pit lane and watching the times. His fest lap held for him to score a front row start as he looks to bring the Flying Horse Motorsports machine another podium. Even though he was keeping an eye on the times, it was another racer that he was thinking about as the session closed.
"I'm happy with how the session went. The car was pretty good even though we had a bit of a push as the session went on," offered Aweida. "Hopefully we'll be good in the race as well. It is too bad that George (Winkler) couldn't get his car back out for qualifying today. Hopefully he can be ready to go for the race. He's a great guy, and a great competitor so you hate to have him have the setbacks like he did today."
Making a remarkable qualifying outing in just his fourth Mustang Challenge race and his first race visit to Lime Rock Park was Richard Gollinello, who will be gunning for a podium as well as the Sunday Group Management "Rookie of the Race" Award to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation.
"I've only just practiced here so this is a great way to start the weekend," offered Gollinello. "I didn't feel like it was that fast of a lap or that I was pushing that hard. This is a short track, but it's pretty challenging. My coach Aaron has me completely focused on the details, and it paid off here in qualifying."
The session produced another tightly-matched field, as the top eight Mustangs were within one second. Double duty driver Steve Phillips notched fourth on the grid as VIR Rookie of the Race Kyle Gimple took fifth ahead of Championship leader Jason von Kluge in sixth. David Rosenblum will add yet another Lime Rock Park chapter in his history from his seventh place grid spot as Pratt Cole's early pole-setting time faded late in the session and the Utah native will start from eighth. Brad Adams will look to move up as he did at VIR from ninth on the grid, with Sloan Urry making a strong impression with a top-ten in a debut qualifying appearance.
