GRAND-AM CUP RETURNS TO MOSPORT IN 2007
BOWMANVILLE, ON (October 10, 2006) -- After a one-year absence, the Grand-Am Cup will return to Mosport International Raceway next season on Father's Day weekend, June 15-17.
Sanctioned by the Daytona-based Grand American Road Racing Association (which is affiliated with NASCAR, International Speedway Corporation and Daytona International Speedway), the Grand-Am Cup features today's hottest import and domestic high-performance production sports cars, coupes and sedans straight from the dealer showroom floor.
"The Grand-Am Cup puts on a great show, so we're thrilled to welcome them back to Mosport next season," said Mosport's President and General Manager, Myles Brandt. "I know our fans will also be happy to see the Series return, because they've been asking for it. I'm really pleased that we could work with the Grand American Road Racing Association to make this happen. It'll be an exciting weekend."
With major modifications permitted only in the area of safety, the Grand-Am Cup Series is made up of two classes of race cars. The big-bore Grand Sport (GS) class features exotic world-class machines like the Porsche 966, Nissan 350Z, BMW M3 and others to go head to head with American iron such as the Pontiac GTO, Cadillac CTS-V, Ford Mustang Cobra and GT and more.
The smaller Street Tuner (ST) class is Grand American's offering to the import and compact car crowd with the Mazda RX-8, Chevy Cobalt SS, Dodge SRT4, Mini Cooper S, Lexus IS 300, Acura RSX and TSX, a variety of BMWs and other models eligible.
Thanks to the large field of entries anticipated, the GS and ST classes are expected to run as separate races. The Mosport round is the 6th stop in the 12-event Grand-Am Cup, which includes races at Daytona, Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca, CA.
Mosport has been Canada's Home of Motorsports since 1961. Located less than an hour east of downtown Toronto, this 750-acre, multi-purpose facility boasts a 4-kilometre road course, a 2.4 kilometre driver development centre with skid pad, a 1.4 km kart circuit and a half-mile paved oval. The four circuits hold more than 400 events a year.
