FONTANA, Calif. (June 7, 2003) -- In Grand American Cup qualifying, Devon Powell and Doug Goad set the fastest time in Grand Touring I, pushing their Powell Motorsport Sunoco / Rockland Standard Gear Corvette Z06 to a track- record time of 1:44.981 on Fontana Speedway's 2.8 mile road course. Powell shattered Darren Law's qualifying track record set last year by 2.823 seconds.

"It's not the best lap I've ever had," Powell said, "--but we're on the Pole". "We were on the front row last year so it's nice to be up there again." Powell and Goad will start the Grand-Am Cup Series event from the front row for today's Lexus Grand American 250.

The Doncaster Racing effort of Greg Wilkins and Dave Lacey will start on the outside of the front row, having just out-qualified team mates Robert Julien and Jean-Francois Dumoulin by less than .06 of a second at 96.375 mph. "I'm looking forward to a good race," Wilkins said. "It's a little bumpy but it makes it really interesting."

David Brown also established a new track record in Grand Sport II, taking the Frederick Motorsports Royal Purple / Steeda Mustang Cobra R to a fast time of 1:51.502, narrowly besting teammates Steve MacDonald and Brendan Mann. The two cars are separated by just .019 mph. "We've got a super chance to win this race but our sister car with Brenden and Steve are going to be there right with us. We'll be fighting them for the win."

Scott Schlesinger earned his first pole in Sports Touring I, clocking a time of 1:54.054 in the SpeedSource #68 Porsche Boxster. Schlesinger commented on his top qualifying position, "It's great. You have to balance the car for all different kinds of features of the track. It's fast, fun and challenging." Currently sitting sixth in driver points standings, Schlesinger won his first- ever SPI victory two weeks ago at Barber Motorsports Park.

A third qualifying record fell Saturday morning, this time in Sports Touring II as Ed Magner led the class with a 2:01.125 second lap at 83.814 mph behind the wheel of the WTF Engineering #48 Chevy Cavalier.

"We put new tires on it and got the ABS to start working finally. We got some good clean runs for the first time. I've never been to this track before, so I really didn't know what to expect." Magner beat Bill Fenton's qualifying record set last year by 2.715 seconds.
