Tremblay Captures Grand-Am Cup Pole in Trois-Rivières
Trois-Rivières, Quebec (August 4, 2001) -- Sylvain Tremblay captured his first-ever Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series pole position during this morning's qualifying for Sunday's Grand-Am Cup race at Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. Tremblay, a native of Quebec, drove the Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Fikse/Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #70 Porsche 911 of Speedsource to a 1:14.619 lap time around the 1.506-mile temporary street course.
"This is pretty neat. This is the closest race track to my home," said Tremblay, who currently leads the driver point standings in the Grand Sport (GS) class. "I have never raced here before, so just being here is great. To come and win the pole is unbelievable."
Starting beside Tremblay in Sunday morning's race will be Emil Assentato, of Locust Valley, N.Y., in the Tradition #53 Mustang Cobra R of D.M.A. Racing. Assentato clocked the second-fastest time of the field, as well as the GS class, with his 1:15.475 lap.
David Tuaty, of Miami, led the Sport Touring (ST) class for most of the 13-minute qualifying session in the Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Fikse/Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #68 Porsche Boxster of Speedsource, but his 1:17.130 lap time was bested on the final lap by Jeff Trask, of Santa Ana, Calif., in the HMS Motorsports.com #34 BMW Z3 of Villaconn International. Trask squeaked out a 1:16.947 final lap to take the ST pole.
The Compact 2000 (C2K) class also saw some changes on the final lap for the second-fastest time in the class, but Hyundai Motorsports' #8 Tiburon maintained its position at the front of the class with a 1:18.080 lap time. Paolo Dal Cin, of nearby St. Lambert, Quebec, piloted the C2K pole-winning machine. Starting behind Dal Cin will be two of Planet Earth Motorsports Acura Integra GSRs, with brothers Wayne and Will Nonnamaker exchanging the second- and third-place positions in the class on the final qualifying lap.
The Grand-Am Cup race at Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières will begin at 8:35 a.m. ET on Sunday and run two-and-a-half hours. Only one race remains in the Grand-Am Cup season following Sunday's race, raising the level of excitement as teams battle for not only a podium finish, but also precious points needed in their quest for a series championship.
Tickets are still on sale for Sunday's Grand-Am Cup race, and may be purchased online at www.gptr.ca. More information on the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series is available online at www.grand-am.com/grandamcup.
