Hometown Favorite Camirand Scores Grand-Am Cup Street Tuner Victory with Thilenius at Trois-Rivieres
TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Canada (August 5, 2006) -- Hometown favorite Marc-Antoine Camirand made a triumphant return to the historic 1.52-mile, 10-turn Trois-Rivieres temporary street course, scoring a Grand-Am Cup Series Street Tuner victory for himself and co-driver David Thilenius Saturday afternoon in the No. 86 Collision Craft Chevrolet Cobalt.
Camirand took control of the No. 86 machine during the race's second caution period, steadily picking off positions while moving to the front. The Canadian passed Matt Plumb in the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S for the lead in Turn 2 on Lap 48 and never looked back, finishing 3.217 seconds ahead of the No. 27 machine to score the first Grand-Am Cup victory of the season for himself, Thilenius and Powell Motorsport.
"Thanks to the Plumb brothers, this was a really clean, safe race for us," Camirand said. "When I got the car from Dave it was really good, he saved the brakes and tires and gave it to me in great shape. Today was incredible. I had a good battle with Plumb because their car was fast on the straights but I was faster in Turns 1 and 2. It's really great to be back on the podium."
Thilenius qualified the machine ninth on the starting grid and ran in the top-10 throughout the opening stint. He has posted three top-10 class finishes in five Grand-Am Cup starts this season, but his previous best result was sixth, last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.
"I've been coming here for five years, and this year I really couldn't have picked a better co-driver," Thilenius said. "Marc did an amazing job out there. I love Trois-Rivieres - the fans, the track - it's a great place to race. I need to thank everyone at Powell Motorsport and S3 Magazine for their support."
A Lap 4 incident between No. 126 Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i driver Paul Stoddart, No. 76 Compass360.com Acura RSX-S driver Mathieu Audette and No. 68 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 driver Scott Schlesinger caused a 15-minute red flag period as track officials cleared debris off the racing surface. The No. 126 machine and No. 76 car made contact in Turn 7, collecting the No. 68 Mazda into the outside tire barrier. Audette was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Trois-Rivieres where he was awake, alert and listed in stable condition and is awaiting results from a precautionary CT scan. Both Schlesinger and Stoddart were uninjured in the incident.
The Plumb brothers scored their fifth-straight podium finish with the runner-up result, moving within four points of No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i co-drivers Don Salama and Will Turner in the Street Tuner class point standings (218-214). Hugh started the machine sixth on the grid, running with the lead group early on. Matt took over during the second full-course caution period and scored the duo's seventh top-eight finish in eight races this season.
"This place couldn't be more racer friendly - the fans are great," Matt Plumb said. "It's really great to be back on the podium. The team did a great job all weekend and this was a good race in the championship picture."
"First of all I want to thank the competitors, and congratulate the hometown hero Marc-Antoine Camirand," Hugh Plumb said. "I also want to thank Bill Fenton, we've really had to crawl back from the beginning of the season to get where we are and it feels great. It's really great to be back on the podium with my brother Matt. He did an excellent job today."
Bob Endicott and Mike Galati finished third in the No. 144 DavisAcura.com Acura RSX-S, followed by teammates Charles Espenlaub and Jeff Altenburg in the No. 142 DavisAcura.com Acura RSX-S. Salama and Turner rounded out the top five in the No. 95 machine, and coupled with the 18th-place finish by Eric Curran and Jamie Holtom in the No. 01 Clearscada/GM Performance Division Chevrolet Cobalt, the BMW duo took over the ST class points lead. Curran and Holtom are now in a tie for third with the Plumbs with 214 markers apiece.
Only two races remain on the 2006 schedule for the Street Tuner machines. Next up is a 200-mile combined class event at the new Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City on Labor Day Weekend, followed by the six-hour stand-alone finale at Virginia International Raceway, October 6-8.
