DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (October 27, 2000) - Grand American Road Racing Association has announced that it is currently reviewing the rules and regulations regarding the distribution and availability of race tires for competitors in the Grand-Am National Championship Series.
Grand-Am recently contacted a number of tire manufacturers that offer race tires and asked them to submit proposals to be listed as eligible tires for competition in the series beginning with the 2001 season.
"Having access to the same tires as everyone else on the starting line is an essential element in providing safe and competitive racing for drivers and for spectators," noted Dave Watson, Grand-Am's Director of Competition. "Our current review of tire policy is aimed at ensuring an adequate supply of racing tires for all of our cars, with no special tire compounds or tire designs being available only to a select few."
Grand-Am has asked the tire manufacturers to provide input during the review phase so that rules can be established that give every manufacturer the opportunity to participate in the series. In its request to the tire companies, Grand-Am stated that its ultimate goal was to provide a competitive racing series "that highlights the skills of the driver, crew and car/engine manufacturers and designers." It also stated its desire to ensure a reasonable supply of tires, to avoid unreasonably high monetary costs for competitors, to promote the interests of safety, and generally to enhance Grand-Am racing for competitors and spectators.
"We have begun to receive comments and proposals back from the tire companies," Watson added. "I think we should have enough information in a few weeks to go ahead and plan our strategy. Ultimately, we want to bring some control over tire availability and pricing so everyone racing in our series has a fair chance to compete on a level playing field."
