Making GRAND-AM History: Pruett, Rojas Enjoying Dominant Season,
Winning Seven Of 10 Daytona Prototype Races For Ganassi Racing Single-Season Victory Record, Tie For Podium Finishes Possible In Montreal
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (Aug. 11, 2010) - Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas look to reach additional milestones in what may become the most dominant season in the history of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 when they visit Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the Montreal 200 on Aug. 28.
With only two races remaining, the drivers of the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley have seven victories and two second-place finishes this season, opening up a commanding lead in the Daytona Prototype championship.
Pruett and Rojas tied the record for most victories in a single season in the most recent race, the Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International, matching the mark set by Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in 2007 for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. Earlier this year, they tied the record for consecutive victories with a pair of three-race winning streaks.
The pair can match another milestone at Montreal with a top-three podium finish. Max Angelelli and Wayne Taylor finished on the podium 10 times in 2005, when they completed every lap for SunTrust Racing en route to capturing the DP title.
The Ganassi team has led nine races, with Pruett pacing nine races for 486 laps and Rojas eight races for 139 circuits. The No. 01 Telmex BMW/Riley led 687 of the 1,846 laps completed this season.
The lone blemish on the team's record was a last-place finish at Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day, when Rojas was involved in an incident in the first turn on the opening lap. The TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates was in position to win two additional races. Justin Wilson went to the garage while leading in the late stages of the season-opening Rolex 24 after hearing a loud noise. The team found no major damage and he returned to finish second. Pruett was leading at New Jersey Motorsports Park when he brushed another car and cut a tire heading to the white flag. He held on to finish second.
The pair won the 2008 Daytona Prototype championship, while Pruett and Max Papis shared the 2004 championship. Pruett and Rojas enter the Montreal 200 with a 26-point lead over Ryan Dalziel, with Ricky Taylor and Angelelli another four points back. Should the TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates drivers win at Montreal, Dalziel would need to finish fourth and Taylor/Angelelli second to remain in mathematical contention entering the season-ending Utah 250 at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City on Sept. 11.
Since entering the GRAND-AM Rolex Series in 2004, Chip Ganassi Racing is undefeated in the Daytona Prototype team championship in even-year seasons. In addition to claiming the drivers' titles in 2004 and 2008, Ganassi took the 2006 team title with Pruett and Luiz Diaz although Krohn Racing's Jorg Bergmeister took the 2006 DP driver title.
Ganassi Racing holds a 30-point lead over SunTrust Racing in the 2010 team standings, and could clinch the championship in the Montreal 200 with a net gain of five points. On the other hand, should the Ganassi team fail to score any points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, SunTrust Racing could take the lead entering the Salt Lake City season finale by finishing first or second.
