GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING PUTS TEAM CHEVY ON PODIUM AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK
Birmingham, Ala. (April 9, 2011) – The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet/Riley driven by Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney put Team Chevy on the podium with a second place finish in the Daytona Prototype (DP) class of the Rolex Sports Car Series at Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, Alabama. The pair of veteran drivers qualified second for the 2:45 hour race and combined some good tire management strategy, great racing on the track and excellent pit and heads-up driving to score the team’s first top-three podium finish of the season
The strong run in the Porsche 250, round three of 2011 season, moved the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team to fifth in the Rolex DP team standings.
After starting the weekend by winning the pole, the team’s first pole in DP competition, the Spirit of Daytona Racing Chevrolet/Coyote driven by Paul Edwards and Antonio Garcia ran among the leaders the majority race, but lost ground late and had to settle for ninth at the checkered flag.
The third Team Chevy DP team, SunTrust Racing Chevrolet/Dallara driven by Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor started third and turned the fastest lap of the race and were even scored as leading several laps. But, a lengthy stay in the garage as a result of issues with the left rear wheel put them down several laps to the leaders resulting in an 11th place in-class finish.
For Team Chevy in Grand Touring (GT) the Banner Racing Camaro GT.R with Oliver Gavin and Gunter Schaldach qualified third and finished second in class and 12th overall. At the checkered, the Autohaus Motorsports Camaro GT.R driven by Bill Lester and Jordan Taylor captured a seventh-in-class finish after starting 10th in-class. The Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Robin Liddell were ninth-in-class at the finish after qualifying second for the race.
In the Grand Sport (GS) class of the Continental Tire Challenge Series, Team Chevy’s Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R team was the second fastest qualifier for the Barber 200. Drivers Matt Bell and John Edwards brought home a fifth place finish for Team Chevy.
The No. 6 Camaro GS.R of Mitchum Motorsports with drivers Jeff Bucknum and Robert Stout finished 10th in the GS class after starting fourth in-class. The second Mitchum entry, the No. 62 driven by Lawson Aschenbach and Joey Atterbury started sixth in-class and was scored 19th in-class at the checkered flag.
The CKS Motorsports Camaro GS.R with drivers Eric Curran and Ashley McCalmont were 17th in-class at the finish coming from the 25th starting position.
The next event for Team Chevy in both the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Continental Tire Challenge Series will be on May 13 – 14, 2011 at Virginia International Raceway, Alton, VA.
