Three Rolex Series Drivers On Auto Racing All-America Team Ballot
Borcheller, Riggins, Wagner Up For Honors
BURBANK, Calif. (November 25, 2003) -- The ballots for the 2003 Auto Racing All-America Team were sent out by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association to nearly 300 members of the motorsports press this week with three Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series drivers up for this year's honors.
Terry Borcheller and Tommy Riggins have been nominated in the Road Racing category, while Cort Wagner is on the ballot in the At-Large category.
Borcheller captured the first-ever Daytona Prototypes driver championship by scoring six wins this season in the Bell Motorsports No. 54 Chevrolet Doran JE-4.
Riggins shared top driver honors in the GTS class with his Heritage Motorsports No. 48 Mustang co-driver Dave Machavern after picking up six wins and eight poles in the class.
Wagner captured his second-straight GT driver championship, sharing the honor with co-driver Brent Martini. The drivers of the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington No. 33 Ferrari 360GT had eight GT victories and poles this season.
Members of the AARWBA will vote from among six drivers named in each category. Two drivers from each category will be named to the first team, to be honored at the Association's annual banquet Jan. 10, in Pomona, Calif. The winner of the Jerry Titus Award will also be announced at the banquet. The Titus Award honors the top driver - the one earning the most votes in the balloting regardless of category.
The balloting will also determine a second team of the drivers placing third and fourth in each category, and honorable mentions to all other drivers receiving at least five percent of the vote.
All three drivers have been recognized by the AARWBA in the past. Borcheller was named to the second team and received an honorable mention in past years, and Riggins also had a prior appearance on the second team. Wagner has previously received an honorable mention.
AARWBA members have annually chosen an All-America Auto Racing Team since 1970. The banquet, which also will salute racing legend Dan Gurney, is open to the public. Ticket information is available from AARWBA, 922 N. Pass Ave., Burbank, Calif. 91505, or call (818) 842-7005.
