Schroeder, Hitt Earn X-1R Poles at Trois-Rivières
All Five Rolex Series Qualifying Records Shattered
Trois-Rivières, Quebec (August 4, 2001) -- Dorsey Schroeder, of Osage Beach, Mo., and Kerry Hitt, of Harrisburg, Pa., earned the X-1R Poles for the pair of Rolex Sports Car Series races being held this weekend at Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. Schroeder will lead the pack of cars in Sunday's Rolex Series race, featuring the SportsRacing Prototype (SRP), SportsRacing Prototype II (SRPII) and GTS classes, while Hitt will be in front at the start of this afternoon's race with the GT, American GT and Super Grand Sport (SGS) classes. All five of the Rolex Series classes saw their qualifying records broken during today's qualifying on the 1.506-mile temporary street course.
Schroeder clocked the fastest lap time in the Thetford/Norcold/Goodyear-sponsored #20 Ford-powered Riley & Scott early in the qualifying session, but was one-upped by teammate James Weaver, of England, in Dyson Racing Team's second car, the #16 Ford. Unhappy with the outside pole position, Schroeder left the pits to try to retake the X-1R Pole. His 59.290-second lap was enough to pull him past Weaver to the front of field.
"I really didn't want to start on the outside here, because it's a bad position going into turns one and two," said Schroeder, who despite racing at Trois-Rivières for several years, has never won a race. "I really used all the track that lap. I'm surprised I didn't scrape the paint off the thing."
The fastest SPRII car during qualifying for Sunday's race was Andy Lally, of Northpoint, N.Y., in the Oberto Beef Jerky #22 Nissan-engined Lola of Archangel Motorsport Services. Lally recorded a 1:03.410 lap time before getting the Nissan stuck in the tires near the end of the qualifying session.
" I let off the brake a little earlier than normal, and it didn't work," said Lally, who currently leads the SRPII driver points race. "The car looks like it doesn't have too much damage."
Chris Bingham, of Kirkland, Wash., also picked up his fifth GTS-class pole of the season during qualifying for Sunday's race. Bingham piloted the BASF/HCI/Yokohama/Park Place Ltd.-sponsored #5 Saleen S7R of Fordahl Motorsports to a 1:06.231 lap time for the pole.
Hitt credited his crew in helping him earn the X-1R Pole for this afternoon's race. He clocked a 1:06.730 lap time in the Advanced Composite Products #46 Corvette on his second qualifying lap. "The crew did a great job. We had a lot of good help," said Hitt of winning his first-ever X-1R Pole. "It's wonderful (that I'm on the front row). It's a nice responsibility."
Starting beside Hitt on the front row this weekend will be Kenny Bupp, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the Hamilton Safe & Security #11 Camaro. Despite recording only six laps on the street course this weekend, due to a blown engine in practice on Friday, Bupp recorded a 1:07.007 lap time.
Spencer Pumpelly, of Mason Neck, Va., will lead the GT class to the green flag this afternoon after earning the class' pole position today. Pumpelly had a 1:07.201 lap time on the final lap to secure the Alliance Residential Management #34 Porsche GT3 R a spot in the front of the GT class.
"Since I wasn't that far away from the front row, I tried to pick up some time at the end, but I couldn't quite make it," explained Pumpelly, who captured his first-ever GT pole earlier this season at the Lime Rock Grand Prix. "We are happy with the pole though."
Doug Goad, of Farmington Hills, Mich., will be pulling double duty during this afternoon's race. He will start the Sunoco/Encompass-sponsored #011 Corvette of Powell Motorsports on the pole position of the SGS class, and then move into the X-1R Performance Lubricants/Goodyear-sponsored #09 Corvette in the American GT class.
"Basically the plan is to keep the #011 clean and out of trouble. Somewhere within the first 30 minutes, I'll bring it in and give it over to Devon (Powell) for the remainder of the race," said Goad, who is in contention for the driver championship in both classes. "Then I'll be on the wall for when Craig (Conway) brings the #09 in."
The #09 Corvette will be one of two cars starting in the back of the field this afternoon. The Corvette blew its engine during this morning's qualifying and will be forced to move to the back of the field since it will start on a back-up engine. The Morrison/Mosler #02 Mosler MT900 will also take the green flag from the back of the pack. The car suffered from mechanical problems this weekend, and although it qualified eighth overall, the team has opted to start from the back of the pack in case its problems continue.
The first Rolex Series race, including the GT, AGT and SGS cars, will be run this afternoon at 3:15 p.m. ET, while the second race for the SRP, SRPII and GTS classes will run on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Today's race will be aired on Speedvision on Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by a live broadcast of the prototype race. Tickets are still on sale for all three of Grand-Am's races, and may be purchased online at www.gptr.ca.
