The No. 74 Informix Software Riley & Scott Judd of Jack Baldwin and George Robinson was fastest in opening SportsRacer practice, turning in a lap of 1:01.246/89.403 mph.

Second was the No. 16 Dyson Racing Riley & Scott Ford of James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger, 1:01.473/89.073 mph.

Third was the No. 12 Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP of Mimmo Schiattarella and Ralf Kelleners, 1:01.891/88.486 mph.

Fourth was the No. 8 Creighton Motorsports Ford Lola of Scott Schubot and Claude Bourbonnais, 1:02.430/87.700 mph, followed by the No. 20 Dyson Racing Riley & Scott Ford of Rob Dyson, John Paul Jr. and Elliott Forbes-Robinson, 1:02.550/87.526 mph, the No. 26 Doran Special of Didier Theys and Ross Bentley, 1:03.207/86.630 mph.

The No. 22 Archangel Motorsports Nissan Lola of Larry Oberto and Ryan Hampton led the SportsRacer Lights with a lap of 1:06.227/82.517 mph, followed by the No. 62 of Rich Grupp and Dennis Spencer, 1:09.667/78.597 mph, and the No. 6 of John Macaluso and Paul Macey, 1:17.935/75.075.

The No. 37 Lola Judd of Jon Field and Oliver Gavin missed most of the opening practice with an overheating problem.

CLAUDE BOURBONNAIS (No. 8 Creighton Motorsports Lola B210K Ford) -- It feels good. They just got to do a little work on the pedals to make the car a little more comfortable, but for a first outing, I'm very satisfied, I'm very happy. I've driven a SportsRacer-type car before, a Ferrari 333SP at Watkins Glen a few years ago, where we finished sixth or seventh. I've also driven a SportsRacer in Europe in '91, at LeMans and a few other races. I know this track like the back of my hand, and driving the SportsRacer is a lot of fun. I just need to learn the car a little bit better. I'm being conservative right now, but we'll get better as we go along.

JAMES WEAVER (No. 16 Dyson Racing Norcold/Thetford/Goodyear Riley & Scott Ford) -- (Weaver has won the Informix Software Way Fast Award four times this season) I hope we can win the pole here. I'm not sure if Butch (Leitzinger) or myself will be in the car during qualifying, but the car's running very, very good. It's going to be close, but we're confident. This is my first time here. I haven't seen this many pretty girls in such a small space, with the possible exception of the Norris Ring (in Germany). It's a lovely area, an exciting town, and I love the people. It's going to be a great event.

DIDIER THEYS (No. 27 Doran Lista Special) -- I hope we do well, but this is really not the best track for us. The Ferrari chassis has never been the best on a temporary race track, and we're going to do the best we can to make the chassis work the best it can, but I think the Riley & Scott has a bit of an advantage at this type of race track.

Friday afternoon's session was for all five Grand-Am divisions.

JACK BALDWIN (No. 74 Informix Software/74 Hunting Ranch Riley & Scott Judd) (Fastest in the morning session, but pitted early in the second session) We broke a right-rear half-shaft. There's no damage to the car, the car's fine, and we should be able to get back before the end of practice. We've run these pieces before, and we were planning to use new half-shafts for the race. We'll just put them in now. These things happen.

MIMMO SCHIATTARELLA (No. 12 Rizi Competizione Ferrari 333SP) -- I ran here once before in a Toyota Atlantic -- I think it was in 1992 -- but that was so long ago I don't really remember the circuit. So this is like a new circuit for me. I'm happy to be here, they've done a real nice job with the track. The ground is smooth, not bumpy like it was year ago. The people here are fantastic. It's only Friday, and the grandstands are already full of people. The atmosphere is fantastic.

Midway through the session, Butch Leitzinger was fastest with a lap of 1:01.1123/89.583 mph), followed by the two Lolas, the No. 37 of Field/Gavin (1:01.483/89.069 mph) and the No. 8 of Schubot/Bourbonnais (1:01.747/88.878 mph).
