Fogarty turns his first laps in the GAINSCO machine in VIR testing
ALTON, Va. - Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney hit the track this morning at the scenic Virginia International Raceway in the rolling hills of southern Virginia, and for Fogarty, it was his first time behind the wheel of GAINSCO/Blackhawk Racing's No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley. Both Gurney and Fogarty turned quick laps in the day's unofficial, unscored testing sessions, and were satisfied with the car. Team owner Bob Stallings could not have been happier with the results of the new pairing.
Owner Quote:
Bob Stallings: "Today was absolutely outstanding. Jon got a great handle on the car quick, and with a couple adjustments we were right on the money. What I really like is his ability to talk with Alex and together learn from each other and communicate what's happening with the car to our engineer, Kyle Brannan. They're working together so easily, and we've had great results so far. I'm so pleased with the effort put in by the crew, led by Terry Wilbert and Ryan Reid and Sam Goldsmith, because the only part of this car that really was Tuttle's is the frame. Everything else, they put on there in the last week. I think we used his roof and one of his doors."
Driver Quotes:
Alex Gurney: "I gotta say, the team did an amazing job putting the GAINSCO car back to normal! I got in this morning and it feels almost exactly like the old car. It's great to have Jon racing with us, he's always a really tough competitor and I'm glad he's on our side. He's going to be a real asset -- we'll push each other and keep each other honest and we like similar things, so I think we'll be a really good pairing. I feel totally comfortable with him. This track is amazing, the Esses are so fast and have quick changes of direction. You really have to work with the car to nail it. I think it's going to be a hell of a race."
Jon Fogarty: "Alex was kind enough to give me the bulk of the track time and, when it wasn't interrupted by yellow flags, the GAINSCO car felt good. We made some small changes and that put us right there in the running, so it's a blast to drive. This Daytona Prototype is a lot more fun to drive than a GT car, as it's for sure much more of a proper race car. It's a bit similar to an Atlantic with the hard compound Hoosiers, but with obviously more weight to be managed. The traffic is tough, as there's a lot of inconsequential bends that make it hard to get around people. Still, it's good being in the faster class for a change. Tomorrow, we'll just look to work on our setup a bit more and see what we can do with the car."
