Miller and Company 14th Fastest in First-Round Grand-Am Practice at VIR
ALTON, Va. (Oct. 1, 2004) -- Johnny Miller turned in the 14th fastest time during first-round practice Friday for Sunday's VIR 400 Presented by SunTrust Grand American Road Racing event at Virginia International Raceway. Miller, driving the No. 18 CHASE Competition Engineering Chevrolet Daytona Prototype, recorded a 1:52.568-minute lap (104.577 miles per hour) around the 3.27-mile permanent road course. Miller is teamed with owner/driver Robert Chase and Chris Bingham this weekend.
"The session went pretty well, especially considering this is just the car's second race weekend," said Miller. "We ran old tires to shake down the car early in the session. We then put on some newer tires and the car really responded. Everything on this car is new, but we're already feeling confident. Robert has put together a really good piece here.
"We laid down that lap and then we put Chris in the car," added Miller. "He's battling a new car and new track, but man is he getting up to speed quickly."
Chase was equally enthusiastic about the run.
"Everything is working on the car," said Chase. "We're progressing rapidly. We're still looking for some time, but we'll find some in the next session. We have some adjustments to make and we plan to leave a little less on the table. We'll run newer tires and we'll look at the data. Hopefully that will answer some questions. The car is well received and there is a lot of interest."
Second-round practice is scheduled for today at 2:10 p.m. The 400-km/77-lap/165-minute race is scheduled to start at noon Sunday and will air LIVE on Speed.
Johnny Miller, from Johnston City, Tenn., finished second in the 2003 Trans-Am Series Championship, after earning a Trans-Am victory, two poles and scoring eight podium finishes in 10 starts. Miller was also one of NASCAR's "hired guns," competing in two NASCAR Nextel Cup races for Morgan-McClure Motorsports. Miller made two 2004 Trans-Am starts in a Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, finishing fifth at Road America after starting last, and finishing second at Denver.
Miller won the 1996 Trans-Am Rookie of the Year award, and was voted BBS Most Improved Driver by his fellow competitors in 1998. He was the 1984 Chrysler-Dodge National Collegiate Driving champion and has had more than 100 career wins, numerous poles, podiums and track records in several race series, including Trans-Am, IMSA, ALMS, GT-America and in SCCA.
Robert Chase and Jack Williams, owners of Chase Competition Engineering, are approved Daytona Prototype manufactures based in Ashland, Va. Their expertise in race car development has been honed from many years of active competition as drivers competing in various levels of national motorsport.
