Michael Shank Racing continues progress at VIR

(Alton, VA) 7 October 05-- Michael Shank Racing continued to prepare for Sunday's VIR 400 during Friday's practice session with the Mears Motor Coach machine of Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears Jr. as well as the Flight Options Lexus-Riley of Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson getting up to speed despite running in difficult conditions. The team opted not to take part in the morning practice session after a steady rain fell and created areas of standing water on the track, but the conditions improved in time for the afternoon's hour-long session.

In the second session, Patterson set a fast time of 2:08.341 seconds, which placed the Flight Options car firmly in the top ten on the day.

"The car was fantastic," said Patterson. "You have to make compromises whenever you run in the rain, but the car was so good that it was really only a matter of backing off my braking points a just a bit and being careful coming out of the slow corners as I went back to power, so I was having a great time out there!"

Running the 500-hp Daytona Prototypes in the slippery conditions can prove tricky for some, but all four Michael Shank Racing drivers were able to post quick times while avoiding any trouble.

"Another good day," smiled team owner Mike Shank. "The cars have been bulletproof so far this weekend and we kept our noses clean in the rain, so it was a good day for us. We don't know which way the weather is going to go this weekend, but we feel like we are going to be strong either way."

The attention to detail that the Michael Shank Racing squad puts into car preparation not only pays dividends with a quick and reliable car, but in difficult conditions it also pays off for the drivers.

"The guys did a great job getting the car ready for the rain," said Borkowski. "They have come up with some creative solutions to the visibility problems we had in the rain earlier this season, so like Mike said, we are good to go no matter what the weather."
