Dyson winning streak tightens points race.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 1, 2002) -- Dyson Racing Team enters next week's Bully Hill Vineyards 250 at Watkins Glen International with a three-race winning streak. The team's rookie driver, Chris Dyson, has quickly closed the gap between him and points leader Didier Theys with each victory and hopes to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his first professional race with a fourth win.
Theys and the Doran Lista Racing team opened up the season with their own three-race streak, which gave the veteran Belgian driver a comfortable lead in the SportsRacing Prototype points race. But all that came to an end in Phoenix when the Dyson team captured its first win of the season at the UnitedAuto 200.
The victory sparked a streak that continued to the 6 Hours of The Glen in June, where Dyson and James Weaver dominated the classic endurance race. The team scored its third-straight win on the Fourth of July in Daytona when Dyson and Weaver bested the Doran Lista team by a narrow 4.3 seconds for the Jani-King Paul Revere 250 crown.
"I think we've had fundamentally sound races the last three outings, and of course our crew does a fantastic job," said Dyson of his team's hot streak.
With each win, the 24-year-old rookie has moved closer to Theys in the point standings, cutting his lead from 23 to 13 points in the last three races. The championship race is expected to heat up even more at the remaining four events of the season, as the prospect of a rookie champion becomes more of a possibility.
"It's been a fun year so far; I've learned quite a lot. To have enough good results to be in contention with a driver of Didier's caliber has been terrific," said Dyson. "It's going to be tough to overtake Didier, and we're taking our schedule one race at a time. I guess we just have to have the best results possible and see what happens."
The next race Dyson and his team must focus on is the Bully Hill Vineyards 250 at The Glen, where he partnered with his father Rob in his professional racing debut last season. Although the Dysons' #20 car did not capture the win in 2001, their teammates Weaver and Butch Leitzinger were victorious in the team's #16 Ford-powered Riley & Scott.
Next week, the junior Dyson will try to defend the team's title with Weaver in the #16 entry, while his father Rob joins Leitzinger in the #20 machine. A victory in the Bully Hill Vineyards 250 would mean a sweep of his home track for the New York native and would move Dyson one step closer to potentially becoming the series' youngest champion.
Tickets are currently on sale for the Bully Hill Vineyards 250, part of the NASCAR Winston Cup Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen, and may be purchased online at www.theglen.com or by calling The Glen's ticket office at 607-535-2481.
