TRG Qualify for the Sahlen's Six Hours of Watkins Glen
The three Porsches of The Racer's Group qualified for Sunday's Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Six Hours of Watkins Glen today, with the #66 F1 Air/Gleason Agency Porsche 911 GT3 RS qualifying best with 4th position in the GT class. Ian James, who currently is tied with his teammates Chris Gleason and RJ Valentine for third place in the Rolex GT driver's championship, qualified the car and commented on his performance.
"The car is very well set up," he said, "and my hat is off to the crew for getting the car into this type of shape. This is an interesting track to drive, and I'm very happy with my qualifying lap -- we'll be in good shape for the start of the race tomorrow, and with six hours of racing to do, I think we have a great shot at a fourth consecutive podium. The pace of the Ferrari is good, but I think our mechanical reliability and our consistent driving favors us in this length of race."
The two factory BMWs again topped the qualifying sheets, followed closely by the Risi Ferrari 360GT, then Ian James in the #66 car, only three tenths of a second off of pole position and seven hundredths of a second off of third position.
James' teammate RJ Valentine summed up the weekend to date. "We're very much in the hunt," he said, "and the combination of Porsche reliability and Ferrari fragility means we're going to fight for a podium finish again. Ian drove the wheels off of the car in qualifying, and we're optimistic about tomorrow. Now we're hoping for a clear, sunny day, and we'll go for it!"
Liz Halliday, who qualified and will start the #67 TRG Porsche, experienced a small problem with the fuel supply system in her car during qualifying today, and will start tomorrow's race in 10th position in the GT class. "I had a clear shot at a couple of laps," she said, "but after the fuel light came on the car pretty quickly started to sputter. I think we'll have a great race tomorrow, and so long as we keep the car out of trouble we'll be in good shape. I'm looking forward to starting the race -- I'm planning to get past a bunch of SGS cars on the start!"
David Master qualified the #65 SGS-class Porsche 911 Cup car 15th in class. He and co-drivers Paul Schroeder and Jason Choulochas will make their first professional starts in tomorrow's race. All three have experienced great success in Porsche Club and SCCA racing, and are anxious to get their first professional race underway.
The Grand-Am Sahlen's Six Hours of Watkins Glen will be broadcast live on Speed Channel from 11:00am -- 12:30pm and 3:00pm -5:30pm on Sunday, June 20.
