Wet Mosport Finds Holtom Atop the Podium

Bowmanville, Ontario- Mother nature couldn't dampen the attitude or resolve of the American GT Challenge competitors racing in the event at Mosport International Raceway over the Victoria Day weekend. The race started under cloudy and threatening skies, but with a dry track. Just shortly into the event, the track was covered in rain.

Jim Holtom [number 38 Scadapack Corvette] took an early lead before the skies opened up and ended the day where he started the weekend, atop the results sheet. Holtom was quickest in all of the practice sessions and qualified in the number one spot. At the start of the race Holtom and Charlie Webster separated themselves from the pack with Bruce Nesbitt[number 11 Dimension Bond Mustang] and Jack Busch[05 Spectro Oils/Spiral Turbos Cutlass] along with the entire field in pursuit.

"I had the race in hand, I was not pushing too hard," said Holtom. "I had pulled a gap on Charlie[Webster] and just settled into a rhythm."

An early full course yellow flag brought the field back into reach of Holtom. Jim was not too pleased to see his mirrors full again. "The caution gathered up the field and my advantage went away," stated Holtom.

Not soon after the event returned to green flag action, for Larry Barcza [3 EMDA Camaro] who spun and came to a rest inside turn one, the rain began.

"What an exciting race," exclaimed second place finisher Charlie Webster [number 95 C.J. Webster of Canada Corvette]. "It was absolutely wonderful to be able to run flat out again before the rain came."

As to his first entry into AGT, said Webster "I can not tell you how much we have enjoy the AGT. We are meeting new people, making new friends and we laughed all weekend long. This is my style of racing."

Webster will return to AGT competition for the Lime Rock event July 4th weekend and has his sights set on concluding the season in Puerto Rico. "I can bring my family and have fun here [AGT events]. You can bet we'll be back for more," commented Webster.

In other action, Glenn Seward and Larry Barcza had a coming together in turn 10. Seward suffered front end bodywork damage and the crew needed to secure loose bodywork before continuing on. Eric Curran in the number 29 Garden Iron Mustang started shotgun on the field. Curran ran as high as first place for a brief stint until being passed again by eventual race winner Jim Holtom.

The American GT Challenge will compete next at Pocono June 18-20.

Race Notes of Interest:

*The NewGMparts.com "Tough Break" Award was presented to Jack Bush [05 Leiffert Motorsports/Spectro Oils/Spiral Turbos Olds Cutlass], for Jack's unfortunate slide from third to fourth in the final results. Busch who held off a hard charging Eric Curran and Malcolm Strachan, lost his wiper blade allowing Malcolm Strachan to pass the 05 car for the final podium spot in the closing stages.

*Mike Diamnd [71 Dimesnion Bond/Racers Law Monte Carlo] received the Hoerr Charger Award. Dimand improved his starting position in the race results by five spots, giving Mike the best overall grid advancement.

*In the event entrant drawing for a complete set of Goodyear Racing Tires, Glenn Seward [51 Farrel Seward Inc Olds Aurora] was awarded a complete set of Goodyear racing radials.

*Tor Krueger finished eighth after running towards the front. A broken exhaust created a loss of power for Krueger.

The American GT Challenge uses purpose built tube frame chassis cars, power by a V-8 & V-6 engine, with composite bodies, replicating series produced American touring or grand touring cars competing exclusively on Goodyear Racing Tires.
