NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR KRASHOS WITH RACE ONE GT3 CUP WIN
MARK KRASHOS' trip to his northern-suburbs home in Adelaide will be a happy one tonight after the Prospect pharmacist took out race one of round three of the 2009 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge series, being held at Mallala this weekend.
After setting a stunning time for pole position earlier in the day, Krashos passed early leader Matt Kingsley at the end of the second lap to run away a five-second winner in the first of three 14-lap races to be held this weekend.
With Krashos' Type-997 car ineligible for outright championship points, Kingsley's consistent drive to second outright also netted him the maximum points to extend his overall lead as the series enters its half-way mark this weekend.
Krashos - who has only had to prior race starts since purchasing his ex Dean Fiore 997 GT3 Cup Car - said he was more than pleased with his race one performance.
"It's been a good day," he enthused. "I have to say a big thanks to Matt Kingsley. We agreed before the start of the race that there wasn't any need to race each other and create risk, so whoever was faster would end up in front. He was true to that because today I, fortunately for me, had the quicker car.
"After that we were able to race and it was great fun. I was very pleased with the pace of the car though it would have been nice to get into the 1m09s again in the race.
"Qualifying was the first time I have had this car on new rubber so to get a 1m09.7 was sensational, very pleasing."
Behind Kingsley, Roger Lago finished third, Sven Burchartz in fourth and Jon Trende fifth after a slow initial getaway and a late race pirouette at turn three.
Behind the leading group there was action aplenty as cars fought in the intense midfield pack.
Local driver Keith Wong charged from an eleventh-placed qualifying effort to finish the race seventh, though it could have been better after an aggressive few opening laps saw him inside the top six early in the race.
Simon Gardiner, also from Adelaide, had qualified an impressive fourth earlier in the day but was relegated to a rear-of-grid starting position after his car was found to be underweight after the qualifying session.
Another to charge though the pack, Gardiner set himself up for a promising Sunday by finishing 10th today.
After qualifying seventh, Jeff Bobik's reputation for fast starts was slightly marred today after stalling and dropping to sixteenth in a heartbeat. A heady charge though the field followed with the Victorian driver eventually finishing eighth to ensure him a starting position towards the front of the field tomorrow.
Whilst some charged though the field, some fell backwards - especially Terry Knight who endured several moments to finish 12th (after starting sixth).
Graeme Cook - who won all three races outright here last year - continued his winning run at Mallala by taking out class B honors in his 1971 911 RS.
Two 14-lap races will be held tomorrow to complete round three of the 2009 GT3 Cup Challenge at Mallala, racing as part of the Shannons National Motor Racing Championships.
