Knockhill British GT lap record set three times in a day

Jones twins' sterling Scottish performance opens up Sunoco Daytona Challenge standings.

Opportunity knocked at Knockhill Racing Circuit yesterday with two official and one unofficial British GT lap records set.

Action aplenty -- some of it less than welcome and the subject, at the time of writing, of an investigation --graced the Fife landscape with the Jones twins' Preci Spark Ascari coming out tops in both races, garnering the pair top points for the weekend in the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge.

That something was in the air at the 1.27-mile circuit was apparent early on in the day when Adam Wilcox, co-driver of the Phil Burton Ferrari 430 Scuderia, set a British GT Knockhill lap record of 49.903 in Race 1's qualifying, pushing the pair to pole.

In Race 1, however, the Jones twins -- David and Godfrey -- blitzed the track with David setting a GT race record of 50.690 in Lap 11. They went on to win the race 8.730 seconds ahead of the Cameron-Griffin pairing in the Mtech Ferrari 430 Scuderia.

Jones" were on pole in and indeed won Race 2, although Griffin squeezed the most from the Ferrari in Lap 8, shaving a few hundredths off the Jones' time, setting another GT lap record of 50.468.

More than a few cars are in need of a quick visit to Dents-r-Uz following a day's racing that was, in polite terms, "competitive".

Still, with the cachet of the British GT championship and the status of the Sunoco Daytona Challenge -- offering a seat in a Daytona Prototype at the Rolex 24, arguably the biggest prize in British motorsport -- at stake, spirited driving is par for the course.

Any change to the Sunoco Daytona Challenge standings resulting from the inquiry will, if necessary, be announced.

Congrats to Chad Racing's Paul Warren who, in another Scuderia, was voted Sunoco Driver of the Weekend.

The challenge standings are opening up with a fair scattering of drivers from all eligible series -- British GT, British F3, SPEED Series and the Radical UK Cup -- in the Top 15. F3's Jean-Eric Vergne and SPEED's Jody Firth are pegged at 87.50 points apiece while GT's Matt Griffin lies in third with 83.75 points.
