Team Modena will be competing at the highest levels in both national and international sportscar racing in 2008, with full seasons of racing for its GT1 and GT3 specification cars which will see the team take on the best the sportscar scene has to offer in what should be an exciting year for the team.
Le Mans 24-Hours and the LMS
The team have received an entry for June's Le Mans 24-Hour race test day with their Aston Martin DBR9, one of 55 highly-prized entries from the 88 applications received, with the actual race two weeks later. The car claimed a top-ten result in 2006 before battling to the finish after a mid-race incident last year - a feat that saw the team take the prize for pit-work awarded by race organisers the ACO. Driver line-up for the prestigious endurance event will be announced closer to the race, but the team are keen to build on the success and reputation of their DBR9, chassis 101, first of the privateer chassis and a race winner in events across the world.
Team Modena are one of ten invited entries in the LM GT1 class for the test day, which usually provides a clear indication of the actual race entry. Ranged against some of the sport's leading GT teams, the whole team are aiming for a strong result, building on the potential shown in 2006 to claim a strong finish in the classic French endurance race.
A full season of Le Mans Series events is planned for the DBR9, with an exciting and rapid driver combination of Team Modena regular Antonio Garcia and experienced Czech racer Tomas Enge. Garcia has completed more races in the Team Modena car than any other driver, including twice racing at Le Mans, while 31-year-old Enge has raced in Formula One and has DBR9 experience with Aston Martin Racing - including the American Le Mans Series and Le Mans itself in recent seasons.
British GT Championship
Team Modena Team Modena will embark on their first full season of racing in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship ready to mount a strong challenge with their GT3-specification Lamborghini Gallardo. Having joined the series halfway through the 2007 season with the brand-new Gallardo, the team showed pace immediately, setting three lap records, as they embarked on a learning curve with the Lamborghini-Wycombe liveried Italian thoroughbred.
For 2008 Adam Jones will once again form part of the driver line-up, with Piers Johnson sharing the Gallardo season-long. Jones showed his pace in the car last season, one of the pairing taking it to a podium finish in the final race of the season, and Johnson has a host of sportscar experience at national and international levels. Rachel Green, twice a winner of the British Women Racing Drivers Club's Wakefield Trophy for outstanding achievement, will take over driving duties when Jones is sidelined due to other commitments.
On the International Stage
Team Modena The Team Modena BMW 320i will again be contesting the Korean Touring Car Championship in the hands of Gene Lee. Third in the series last season, for 2008 there is support from Michelin Tyres and the package should be contesting for championship honours from the first race.
In the US, Team Modena will be offering technical assistance to Bell Motorsport with their new Aston Martin DBR9 that will be contesting the 2008 ALMS. At a recent shakedown for the new car at Sebring, Florida, Team Modena personal - including Team Manager Hans Muehlbauer - were present, with Garcia giving his input from behind the wheel.
Big Year for Team Modena
"We have worked hard in the last two seasons, and this year we are very confident of running a successful campaign in both the LMS and British GT3," says Team Principal Graham Schultz. "Key personnel have enhanced the team and I am very happy with where we are now.
"We are pleased to have such strong driver line-ups, and Antonio and Tomas in particular should be very exciting - good friends and as quick as each other. Our entry is in for Le Mans, and we are hoping we will be successful in gaining a place in the 24-Hours, we learnt a lot in what was a difficult race last year.
"We have done a lot of work on the Lamborghini and now have a strong car building on our experience in 2007.
"This will be a big year for us; things should develop through the year and the Team Modena name should be at the forefront of a lot of exciting events."
Opening Le Mans Series Event: Catalunya, Spain, April 5th / 6th
