Bilski Takes Race 2 and Championship Leaderboard in Action Packed GT4 Asia Cup
Daniel Bilski took the win in Round 2 of the GT4 Asia Cup after an incident filled race at the Sepang International Circuit with a time 38:15.640s with Ryan Marsden crossing the line in 40:52.604s while Frank Yee had to settle for third place 0.400s later.
Marsden, driving for Dynaten Motorsports, lost a spot at Turn 1 after starting from third while Bilski sneaked into second as Race 1 winners Williamson/Waters took the lead.
Marsden however kept the pressure on Frank Yee and the battle continued until the driver change window opened.
The GT4 Asia race rules state that each car needs to pit for a time equalised pit stop, regardless if they are changing drivers or not. Tactically teams can either try to gain an advantage with a fresh driver or risk losing precious time in case of errors during the change.
Marsden pitted but as in the first race the team misjudged the pit stop time by the narrowest of margins and he was awarded a drive through penalty, his second of the weekend.
The pit stop however cost the leading pair of Williamson/Waters heavily, as Simon Waters lost control from a brake failure thus giving Bilski the chance he needed to take the win.
Williamson/Waters' exit also promoted Frank Yee into second spot, closely followed by Marsden, despite the latter having to serve a drive through penalty.
"I was having handling problems but I gave it my best to control the car," said Hong Kong's Frank Yee. He however could not hold off Marsden's attack and the latter sneaked by for his second podium finish.
"I should not get a penalty if I want to win but it was a fantastic weekend for me and the team," said Marsden of his double podium season opener.
The duo of Malagamuwa/D'Silva could not repeat the success of the first race as D'Silva suffered mechanical problems at the start costing the pair valuable time.
However, D'Silva did well to gain back positions and take fourth spot as Marsden served his penalty.
After Malagamuwa took over, he was closing in on Yee and tried to make an over optimistic pass into turn 4. As Yee turned in, they made contact resulting in a spin for Yee. Soon after, Malagamuwa's Nexus Racing Aston Martin developed a puncture as a result of the contact and although the driver was quick to pit for a tyre change, Marsden seized the advantage well.
With the ten points collected from race two, Daniel Bilski now leads the GT4 Asia Cup with 15 points followed by Marsden with 14 points and teammates Malagamuwa and D'Silva share third with 13 points each.
Yee is in fourth with 10 points and Waters/Williamson in fifth place with 6 points.
The next race will be held on June 18-20 at Sepang International Circuit.
