The Gianni Brothers, Michele and Pietro, currently hold a five point lead at the head of the overall driver standings as the Lamborghini GTR Supertrophy heads to the Grand Prix venue of Magny Cours in France this weekend, July 28/29. The event is the fourth round of the series and if the previous races are anything to go by, we can expect a spectacular battle.
The 4.225km circuit will be echoing to the sound of 20 V12-engined Lamborghini Diablo GTR's, not once, but twice over the course of the weekend, with the first of the two 50-minute races taking place on Saturday afternoon before all of the drivers and teams take to the track once more on Sunday.
At the previous round at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium, the Supertrophy drivers got the chance to stretch the legs of the 590bhp machines and the long, sweeping corners at Magny Cours should allow the drivers more of the same. Pietro Gianni (I) (Mig Power) took the Pro/Am and overall victory in race one in Belgium, with Michael Neugarten (B) and Kurt Thiers (B) (Labre Competition) sharing the honours in race two. Meanwhile, in the Gentlemen Drivers class, Lee Cunningham (GB) (Riverside) and Stephane Lang-Willar (Riverside) shared a victory apiece.
Lang-Willar took a pair of second places in the Magny Cours round last season, his first racing cars, and he will be looking to improve on those results to increase his lead at the head of the Gentleman Drivers standings.
The winner of one of last year's Gentlemen Driver's races, Patrick Spadacini (F) will be out to try to halt his progress, while Lee Cunningham needs a good result to move up from third in the standings.
The strong French entry - 16 out of the 36 drivers registered so far - will be bolstered with the addition of former French Grand Prix Legend, Rene Arnoux, at the wheel of the Lamborghini VIP car. Magny Cours was where Arnoux started his career, at the famous Winfield Race School and he has not raced competitively since the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. However, he has recently driven a Renault F1 car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. Those who remember his titanic battle with Giles Villeneuve in the French Grand Prix at Dijon, will know that he will be sure to put on a fine display of skill during the weekend. Partnering Arnoux will be journalist Thierry Etienne from the French newspaper LE FIGARO.
