Sevin/Gounon move ahead after Silverstone win.
Lamborghini VIP car victory for Needell/Hales pairing.

Franck Sevin and Jean-Marc Gounon powered their bright yellow Corona backed Diablo to double maximum points score in the Silverstone Lamborghini GTR Supertrophy races at the weekend, taking outright victory for their Hidair Motorsport team, although they were beaten to the chequered flag in the second race by the Lamborghini VIP car driven by British TV star Tiff Needell and motoring journalist Mark Hales. Italy's popular pairing of Zoboli/Tirella (Mig Power) lost out on their opening round points lead when a collision in the early part of the second race sidelined them in frustration.

Friday qualifying had seen Jean-Marc Gounon snatch pole for the Saturday race (where the Pro drivers take the grid and hand over to the Am drivers for the latter part of the 50 minute race) from Velay (Autovitesse) and a guest appearance of young ace Tim Mullen (partnering Gianni Ferreri in the Fortec car), while the Lamborghini VIP car ruled supreme in the hands of former TVR racer of repute, Mark Hales, who claimed pole for the Sunday race. Gerard Larousse (Mig Power) completed the Sunday race front row ahead of another British guest driver, Nick Leason (sharing the Fortec prepared car of Mhitarian).

Saturday's race got underway at a cracking pace, with Gounon chased by young Mullen, while Needell was punted by Reiter Engineering team-mate Lee Cunningham (later apologising to the TV star and former Le Mans racer), but Needell only made it as far as the pitlane at half-distance when the car was retired with a collision-damaged and burnt-out wheel bearing. Zoboli/Tirella enjoyed a trouble-free race to chase the distant eventual winners, with Larousse pacing himself into podium place, as he did the following day.

Sunday's race was somewhat quieter in action, but that took nothing away from a splendid victory for Hales and Needell, who took total control of the 25 laps to win outright (although, sadly no Supertrophy points) from Sevin/Gounon. And when the Cunningham/Pasey car collided with the Zoboli/Tirella car on the opening lap, we were guaranteed a change in series leader to the Sevin/Gounon pairing as the Lamborghini V12 muscle-cars left Silverstone ready for the next races at Jarama in Spain, early in June.
