SENSATIONAL GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE FOR LAMBORGHINI

Lamborghini drivers Peter Kox and Albert von Thurn und Taxis became ADAC GT Masters Drivers' Champions by claiming a double podium finish in the season finale at Oschersleben, Germany, on 2-3 October 2010. The Reiter Engineering duo finished the season 13 points clear of their closest rivals, racing the #24 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4.

Kox and von Thurn und Taxis approached the final race weekend with a nine-point advantage in the standings, but with a total of 20 points up for grabs in the last two races, the title fight was still open between the Lamborghini duo and Audi drivers Christopher Mies and Luca Ludwig. Abt Sportsline's Mies and Ludwig, who normally share a car, raced separately at Oschersleben to give them a double chance of beating the Reiter Engineering pilots.

In Saturday's qualifying one von Thurn und Taxis recorded the third fastest lap of 1:29.360, only 0.295 behind the pole position time. Kox was flying in qualifying two, setting a 1:28.665 to put the #24 Lamborghini on pole for Sunday's race two.

German driver von Thurn und Taxis got behind the wheel first in race one. From second on the grid, Ludwig took the lead at the start, with Kuba Giermaziak second in the sister Audi and von Thurn und Taxis third. The Lamborghini driver held his position until handing over to Kox. The Dutch driver crossed the finish line third but was later promoted to second as the #2 Audi was penalised for jumping the start: the stewards issued a 30-second penalty to the Ludwig-Klingmann duo, demoting them 13th place, leaving Ludwig out of the title race.

Over 13,000 fans gathered at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, near Magdeburg, on Sunday to watch the title showdown. Following Ludwig's penalty, Mies was still in title contention with a seven-point gap to the Lamborghini pair. Kox started race two from pole and held onto the lead, despite contact from a pursuing Audi at the start. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 suffered only minor damage from the collision and could carry on. The #24 Lamborghini pitted from the lead and lost track position to Klingmann in the pits, re-emerging in second place with von Thurn und Taxis at the wheel. Meanwhile, Mies, having started seventh, could not climb up the order to challenge the Lamborghini drivers and his team-mate Giermaziak was running in ninth place in the closing stages. Von Thurn und Taxis put in a flawless performance in the final laps, only missing out on a race victory by 0.357 seconds.

Throughout the 2010 season, Kox and von Thurn und Taxis secured four victories and three second-place finishes. Reiter Engineering finished the season in second in the ADAC GT Masters Teams' Championship with 85 points, despite competing with only one car in all race meetings bar one. The 2010 championship title marks the first time that a Lamborghini driver has won the ADAC GT Masters Drivers' Championship.

"We have a long history with the Reiter Engineering team and it is great that finally we have won the title together," said Kox. "Everything went according to plan this weekend. The new Lamborghini GT3 car is very fast; it is competitive in all championships where it is entered." Von Thurn und Taxis added: "this is the happiest moment of my life. In the last minutes of the race I was thinking that something might still happen. I even started praying but then I stopped so that I wouldn't be distracted!"

"This is a phenomenal result for Lamborghini", said Automobili Lamborghini Director of Brand and Design Manfred Fitzgerald. "The ADAC GT Masters is a highly competitive series with several great drivers and remarkable teams. Winning the championship title clearly shows how strong the Lamborghini package is: this result is a highlight of an immensely successful season, which includes victories in the FIA GT1 World Championship and in national classes such as the Italian and British GT Championships. It is great to be celebrating again, having just returned from the spectacular season finale of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo at Vallelunga, Italy, a week ago."

The next challenge for Lamborghini and the Reiter Engineering team is the FIA GT1 World Championship, where the German outfit is currently second in the Teams' World Championship with three rounds to go.
