BAIRD RUNS AWAY WITH FIRST BATTERY TOWN RACE
Fastest qualifier Craig Baird ran away with the first Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup race of the weekend at the sixth round of the 2004/05 series at Feilding's Manfeild Autocourse this afternoon.
After again pipping arch rival Matt Halliday for pole position in the morning qualifying session Baird got another textbook start and set the fastest race lap, crossing the line 0.469 seconds in front of Halliday, 14.455 seconds in front of third placed Dean Cockerton and 20.633 seconds ahead of Dean Fulford in fourth.
Cockerton's was one of the best performances of the race, the Auckland man taking over the mantle of Tag Heuer Carrera Challenge (for drivers 35 years and over) from Ross Rutherford and Rick Armstrong.
Unfortunately Ross Rutherford, who set the third fastest time in qualifying, just 0.659 of a second behind Baird, found himself boxed in at the start and retired on the second lap with radiator damage after contact as he tried to work his way back up through the field.
Auckland driver Rhys McKay was the big mover with an excellent start from eighth place on the grid but got no further than the Dunlop sweeper before contact saw him spinning into the infield.
He was able to continue but ended up crossing the line in ninth place.
Former Bridgestone Porsche series star Graeme Cameron put in one of his best qualifying performances of the Battery Town Series to start and finish the race sixth.
Australian visitor Klark Quinn, a front-runner in the Carrera Cup across the Tasman and standing in for yachty Grant Dalton, set the seventh fastest time in qualifying on his first visit to the 3.030 km Manawatu track and finished the 10 lap race in fifth place, just 0.649 of a second behind fourth placed Dean Fulford.
