PROTOTYPE TECHNOLOGY GROUP BMW M3 TEAM USRRC SPORTS CAR EXTRAVAGANZA -- Press Notes for Sunday, May 17, 1998
PTG BMW M3s FINISH 1-2 IN GT3 - Ross Bentley and Mark Simo drove the PTG BMW M3s to a 1-2 finish in the GT3 class in today's 2-hour, 15-minute USRRC Sports Car Extravaganza at the Homestead Motorsports Complex south of Miami, Fla. Bentley, co-driving the No. 1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door with Marc Duez, caught Simo in the No. 10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door coming off the last turn and beat his teammate to the finish line for his first victory of the year. Simo co-drove the No. 10 M3 with Boris Said, who Saturday qualified the car on the GT3 pole. Duez qualified the No. 1 M3 second in GT3 on Saturday, and the car finished in seventh place overall today. Simo and Said finished eighth overall. The team remains unbeaten in USRRC competition, having won the season-opening Daytona 24-Hour event, and also is unbeaten in Professional Sports Car Racing competition with 1-2 finishes at the Sebring 12-Hour and Las Vegas. Overall the team has won 18 of its last 20 outings. Duez, who was in the winning PTG BMW M3 at Daytona, took sole possession of the USRRC GT3 driver's points standings. He holds a 70-67 lead over teammate Said.
ANOTHER BMW M3 WINS IN GT2 - Andy Pilgrim, Terry Borcheller and Scott Newman drove the No. 54 Massari-Muller BMW M3 to a two-lap victory in the GT2 class. The team began the weekend practicing as a GT3 entry on Friday. They moved up to GT2 prior to practice and qualifying Saturday before Pilgrim put the car on the GT2 pole. It was the second consecutive GT2 victory for a BMW M3. Pilgrim teamed with Bill Auberlen and Boris Said to drive a PTG BMW M3 to the GT2 victory at the last Sports Car series event at Las Vegas April 26.
ROSS BENTLEY, No. 1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door - "That's about the funnest race I've had in a long, long time. We (teammate Mark Simo and I) played cat-and-mouse there at the end, passed each other a couple of times, and I just got a good run on him through the fast stuff on the back side of the course. Then, coming off the last turn, I got a good run and was able to beat him down the straightaway to the finish line. It had to be a good show, even if it was between teammates. Tom (Milner, PTG team owner) let us go racing and that made it interesting for everyone on the team. Hats off to them. They all did a great job."
MARC DUEZ, No. 1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door -- "Ross put on a good show. Mark (Simo), I feel sorry for him. But I must say I was pulling for Ross to win it. We had a very difficult time out there. Every lap we were fighting to get a good time, and we didn't get a good time. There was a lot of gravel and marbles on the course, and every time we moved off the racing line to let a faster car get by, it was very slippery. But thank goodness we were determined to work hard all the way through and ended up with a good race at the end."
MARK SIMO, No. 10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door - "We (Ross Bentley and I) just traded mistakes down the stretch. I got a little too aggressive, I think, and I never saw the white flag because the (overall) race leader was between us when we passed the finish line. If I would have known we were on the last lap, I would have worked harder to hold my position. But I got a little too wide coming off the last turn and Ross was able to get by me. It's not so bad, I guess. If you're going to get beat, it might as well be by your teammate."
TOM MILNER, PTG Team Owner - "Hey, if there's no one else left to race with us at the end, we might as well race each other. It was very exciting for the team to finish 1-2, and even more exciting to watch it come down to the last lap. I told the drivers they could race each other, but if they hurt the cars ... well, we won't get into that!"
