PTG BMW M3 TEAM Notes & quotes Sunday...Race 2-2-2

Well, in the early light of day, Tom Milner apparently still felt relaxed and thought that things were going well. As the sun was getting comfortably situated in the sky and the thin morning haze was dissipating, he let his crew do that "little thing" that he had cooked up prior to the start of the race yesterday.

About 7:00 a.m., on one of the team's routine pit stops, he let driver Boris Said change a tire. Boris had been wanting to do it for some time, and Milner agreed. When the time came, Boris got the job done, but he's not expecting a call from NASCAR's Wood Brothers. "I changed one during test day (three weeks ago) and smoked all of those guys (pointing to the crew); but today I folded up."

Throughout the morning, Car #7 has continued to experience the nagging misfire. The crew has changed spark plugs, the coil packs, mass airflow sensor, throttle position sensor and crank position sensor. As crewmember Greg Forde put it, "everything you could get to easily." However, nothing seems to have had a positive effect.

Meanwhile, Car #10 has been furiously chasing the #41 Porsche that assumed the class lead when the steering arm broke on the PTG car. Auberlen, Said, Duez and Cunningham move the car through the field with surgical precision, gradually narrowing the margin. The two cars go at it for seven hours, with the M3 continually drawing closer. Then the battle comes to a slightly premature conclusion when a balljoint fails on the Porsche and it is eliminated.

During one of his morning stints in Car #7, Ross Bentley was hit by another car in the first of the two sweeping horsheshoe turns in Daytona's infield section. Bentley indicated that it was possible that the Porsche could have lost his brakes, but he couldn't be certain about that. The collision caused damage to the car's bodywork but not to the running gear.

Ross Bentley: Car #7: On the appearance of the car and the misfire: "Poor little car...but it's amazing! With that misfire going on for 13 hours we couldn't get a clean downshift...and still the transmission held up."

Les Delano drove the final shift in Car #7, and had the engine stop just as he passsed under the checkered flag at the end of the race. He coasted safely to a stop and waited a while. After he let the car sit briefly, it started right up and he drove it back to the pits.
