The SRO Motorsports Group and the Sean Edwards Foundation are both looking for ways to make motor racing safer. In a joint partnership a virtual safety test will be developed to further increase the awareness of amateur and rookie drivers and to help them to achieve the level of racing required.

Since he became the first ever GT3 champion by winning the inaugural FIA GT3 European title in 2006, Sean Edwards has held a special place in the hearts of all the members of the SRO family. It is with great pleasure that SRO Motorsports Group joins the Sean Edwards Foundation in their bid to implement a number of safety initiatives throughout their series. By educating youngsters, amateurs and gentleman drivers about the importance of upholding personal safety when racing, safety in general will improve.

Due to the growing success of the Blancpain GT Series, more and more nationalities are represented. For example, drivers from 31 countries took part in this year’s Total 24 Hours of Spa. To standardize the safety awareness of every driver SRO Motorsports Group will implement one of SEF’s recently announced initiatives: the Sean Edwards Test (SET). Prior to the first race and before the Total 24 Hours of Spa, drivers will take a computer-based safety test. For the drivers who fail the test special coaching sessions will be proposed and SRO Motorsports Group will organise additional drivers briefings to further increase safety.

New collaboration

To put the new collaboration between SRO Motorsports Group and the Sean Edwards Foundation in the spotlight, the drivers participating in the penultimate round of the Blancpain Sprint Series at the Belgian track of Zolder joined the #jump4SEF initiative, showing their support for the initiative.

The Sean Edwards Foundation, established by his mother, Daphne, aims to implement initiatives that educate drivers about safety within motorsport. Motor racing is inherently dangerous. While the quest for better safety standards in terms of technology and procedure continues, the determining factor remains the same as it has for a century: the human behind the wheel.

It’s the re-setting of drivers’ attitudes towards their racing and coaching that now sustains SEF in its campaign for greater appreciation of personal safety and responsibility.

Edwards was fatally injured at Queensland Raceway in Australia when the driver of the car he was a passenger in crashed heavily on 15 October 2013. He was just 26.

Edwards was leading Supercup

At the time of his death, and with just one round remaining, Sean was leading the Porsche Supercup standings. He’d also just become only the third Briton ever to win the Nürburgring 24 Hours outright. His achievements also include twice winning the Dubai 24 Hours and being crowned FIA GT3 European Champion aged 19.

SRO Motorsports Group was founded by Stephane Ratel and has specialised in the promotion, support and organisation of many national and international motorsport series since 1995.

In 2014, SRO promoted several championships and series, such as the Blancpain GT Series with the Blancpain Sprint Series and the Blancpain Endurance Series, including the iconic Total 24 hours of Spa, the Cooper Tires British F3 Championship, the Avon Tyres British GT Championship and has various franchise agreements including the GT4 European Series.

SRO has offices in London, Paris and Liège.
