Spa 24: Mercedes takes control at midnight as lead Audi shunts
As midnight fell at the Spa 24 Hours, Mercedes led the pack thanks to the ROWE Racing car of Stef Dusseldorp/Nico Bastiaan/Dani Juncadella.
A crash by race leader Laurens Vanthoor late in the evening cost his Audi five laps, the Belgian ace citing a self-induced error in traffic as the cause of the off.
That allowed the Mercedes to take the lead ahead of the Pro Am Ferrari 458 Italia of Gianmaria Bruni/Alessandro Pierguidi/Pasin Lathouras/Stephane Lemeret and the Audi of Stephane Ortelli/Frank Stippler/Nico Muller, while the better-placed Marc VDS BMW Z4 ran fourth with Maxime Martin back at the wheel.
All of the leading Pro Cup cars were out of the points at the six-hour mark, the most significant result being retirement for Bentley number 7 of Steven Kane and Guy Smith after Andy Meyrick crashed it at Les Combes.
