NEW DAWN AWAITS FOR NISSAN
A new dawn awaits for Nissan this weekend with the first round of the all-new 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi. After a development season with the Gigawave Motorsport team, the Nissan GT-R is ready for the challenge of world-class competition with two independent racing teams.
The two teams running the Nissan GT-Rs in the new championship are Sumo Power GT and Swiss Racing Team. Sumo Power's No.23 car fields a very driver strong line-up consisting of Germany's Michael Krumm, who raced the car in 2009, and Scottish sportscar ace, Peter Dumbreck. The sister Sumo Power GT-R (No.22) will provide tough competition for Krumm and Dumbreck as it will be raced by Britons Jamie Campbell-Walter, a former FIA GT Champion, and Warren Hughes, both very successful sportscar racers.
"Prior to now I have completed two tests with Sumo Power and the Nissan GT-R," said Campbell-Walter, during testing at Yas Marina earlier today. "During the test we have taken steps forward and Warren (Hughes) and I have got used to working together. Everything is new but it is all starting to gel and we are working hard today to get the best possible set-up for Saturday's races. This will be a tricky circuit for us as it has a lot of slow corners but let's see what Saturday brings."
"As a team we have completed four tests to prepare for this season," commented Allen Orchard, the Team Manager at Sumo Power GT. "Considering the team was only born in late January I think we are doing a good job, especially when you consider what it takes to put together a racing team. This weekend is a step into the unknown for us. I don't have a crystal ball but I would be very happy with a respectable top ten finish."
Over at Swiss Racing Team another former FIA GT Champion, Karl Wendlinger, partners 2007 FIA GT3 Champion Henri Moser in the No.3 Nissan GT-R. The No.4 Swiss Racing Nissan GT-R has Japanese Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Seiji Ara, at the wheel, alongside Sweden's Max Nilsson.
"I love the GT-R," said Ara. "It is very special to me and also to the Japanese people. I am also very happy to be racing in the FIA GT1 World Championship. When you put those two things together it makes the perfect job for me. This is my first test with the team and so far everything is going well. I'm happy to be with Swiss Racing Team and I'm looking forward to our first weekend of racing."
All of the cars in the FIA GT1 World Championship went through an unbiased test at the Yas Marina Circuit earlier today in order to balance the performance of the different marques, ensuring close competition in this weekend's two one-hour races.
The first of the two races (the qualifying race) takes place on Saturday at 1600hrs, prior to the main championship race getting underway at 1945hrs.
