CARE'S 'NEW' CUSTOMER ENGINE TO MAKE FIA GT DEBUT IN DUBAI

The car which won three FIA GT Championships in a row, the Care Racing Ferrari 550 Maranello, will make its return to the Championship in Dubai next week for the final round of the 2006 season. But this will be a Ferrari 550 with a difference, as it will feature the 'new', restrictor-less, customer engine recently seen in the FFSA French GT Championship.

2005 FIA GT Drivers' Champion, Gabriele Gardel, will be joined by his Swiss countryman, Steve Zacchia, and Frédéric Makowiecki in the Larbre Compétition run Ferrari. The aim of the team is to demonstrate the performance capabilities of the engine to the FIA's Technical Department and to potential customers. The new engine, developed by Prodrive for Care Racing, does not use restrictors to limit the maximum power output of an engine but instead the power is limited electronically with electronic throttles and a recording system.

Although the engine has not yet been seen by the FIA, a full technical specification has been submitted. The Maranello will run with 40kg ballast (as a 'new' entrant to the 2006 season) and will not be eligible to score points. Its performance level will be ultimately controllable by the FIA.

While Gardel and Zacchia both have considerable experience with the Ferrari, it will be a first for Frédéric Makowiecki. The runner up to this year's French Porsche Carrera Cup title, the 25-year-old Frenchman has also been competing in the FIA GT3 European Championship for the Racing Logistic team in a Dodge Viper.

Care Racing's Frédéric Dor is pleased that the FIA has allowed the restrictor-less engine to run in Dubai. "The FFSA and the ACO have expressed interest in this new concept of engine after seeing it run at Le Mans and Magny Cours in the last two rounds of the French GT Championship, and now I am pleased that the FIA has agreed to look at its performance.

"Our main objective at Care Racing is to try and reduce the costs of competing in endurance racing and we believe that this is the future. Engine costs could be reduced by as much as two thirds which will open the door to a great many potential customers in GT racing."
