REID ON POLE IN OSCHERSLEBEN GT3
Under blue skies Anthony Reid made hay in qualifying for Round 2 of the FIA GT3 Championship at Oschersleben today. A holiday atmosphere prevailed at the circuit following the win by the German football team the previous evening and the Pouchelon team seemed to plug in to the euphoria with exceptional performances from each of our 6 drivers across the 2 qualifying sessions.
Anthony Reid went in Qualifying 1 which was promptly red flagged after 2 laps. At the restart, Anthony led the field away and went for it, going fastest on his 2nd lap. His time was briefly eclipsed by fellow Scot Andy Thompson in the Ascari but Reid's experience told as he hung back on his 8th lap and in clear air put in a blinding lap of 1.30.239 to put pole beyond reach for anyone else. "I'm always pleased to be on pole" was his verdict "but there is more in the car - we have some work to do before the race".
David Hallyday had only arrived from Los Angeles late the previous evening and his only laps on Friday had been on a pit bike driven by Reid. Hence getting into the car for the first time at qualifying was a big adventure for the charismatic French singer. He hit a high note, running in the top 10 for most of the session and ending up 12th on 1:31.764, a full second ahead of 2005 British GT champion Dimitris Deverikos. David was as pleased as the team with his debut performance.
Maxime Dubrulle was comfortable in his first GT3 event having tested at Mas du Clos with the team on Monday and run strongly in the Friday test sessions. Despite his lack of experience at this level he continued to improve steadily throughout the session and finally claimed 13th on the grid with a 1:31.847. "Maxime has done a really good job this morning" was Alex Pouchelon's reaction. Gilles Duqueine went in Quali 2 and suffered in traffic making a rhythm hard to find. The session was red flagged and restarted with just 6 minutes left, meaning it was now or never for the popular French driver. He didn't disappoint one bit as he fired in a personal best of 1:30.798 to grab 8th in the session. "I see Gilles and Anthony as the strongest driver pairing today" reasoned Team Manager Alex Pouchelon after the session "we are looking for our first podium in FIA GT3 this weekend".
Wido Roessler had spent an evening with Reid going over data and arrived at the circuit with a new insight into the way the Viper works "I wil be trying some ideas we talked about last evening" he said. In what seemed a bunched up pack of cars, Roessler found it hard to get a clear lap but seized the only chance he got and put the car into the top 10. Ending the session 11th and ahead of ex-F1 driver Tiff Needell, Roessler was satisfied "there was always traffic but I found a gap and tried what Anthony had told me. I'm very happy with that time".
Kevin Morel delivered the goods in his session despite having never driven a race car of more than 200BHP previously. He outqualified drivers of the calibre of Oliver Bryant and Aaron Scott to claim 26th on the 41 car grid for his race. The Peugeot 206CC Cup front runner was consistent and tidy and pleased Alex Pouchelon "Kevin has potential in GTs and we expect Kevin and Maxime to go well this weekend".
