REITER TAKE FIRST STEPS TO SUCCESS
After today's first two practice sessions at the 3.6km short, tight and twisty Oschersleben track, the Reiter Engineering team is feeling confident about the car's potential for success in Sunday's 7th round of the FIA GT Championship, despite being a small, privateer entry battling against the might of factory-supported teams.
Norman Simon, of Wiesbaden, Germany, used his experience and knowledge of the track to work on the set up of the Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT. His best time of 1:25.298 placed him in a very competitive 6th place in this afternoon's 90-minutes of free practice, the time being an improvement of 1 second from this morning.
Dutch driver, Peter Kox, had not driven at Oschersleben before today and, apart from learning the track, was content to let Simon have the majority of the seat time. It will be the German who qualifies tomorrow. One of the most experienced drivers in the Championship, Kox's first impressions were measured: "It's a technical circuit from the point of view of setting up the car because it's so twisty and short. You have to use the kerbs to get a good lap and we were struggling earlier on with a bit too much understeer. It's also a nightmare overtaking which will make the race interesting!"
Team Principal, Hans Reiter, summed up the team's first day at their 'home' race: "I think our times today compared well with most of our competitors. Every time we run, we learn more about the car and we make good steps forward with endurance and reliability issues. We moved from 11th to 6th in the time sheets and I think that shows the kind of progress we made.
"We did a long run this afternoon which gave us some good feedback about how the car and the Michelin tyres are working together and I'm confident that our race pace will make us very competitive. To be honest, I think we will be better in the race than in qualifying as we found our lap times improved as the tyres got older. We still have some work to do in this area, but it is all going in a positive direction."
Reiter Engineering, based in Kirchanschöring, near the German/Austrian border, has been working tirelessly to develop the 6-litre V12 engined Lamborghini Murcielago into a proven endurance sports car. A car has recently been sold to Bernard Müller who, with Michael Trunk, is planning to enter it for the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans.
