TURNER DELIVERS IN PORTUGAL
Darren Turner had a much better race meeting than expected in Portugal this weekend. With the success ballast from the double victory in Germany, he and his team mate Tomas Enge didn't expect to be fighting for the top positions this weekend but they came away with a fourth place on Saturday and a top ten finish on Sunday.
Weighed down by 40kgs of success ballast from their win at the Nurburgring, Darren and Tomas qualified the No.7 Aston Martin in 11th place for Saturday's qualifying race. The aim of this race was to gain as many positions as possible in order to secure a good grid spot for the main race on Sunday.
Tomas started the race and after a good run came in from tenth place to hand the DBR9 over to Darren. Another rapid pit stop by the Young Driver AMR crew got Darren into the race in sixth place. He then converted this to fourth by catching and passing two cars and set up a second row grid spot for Sunday's race.
The start of yesterday's race was down to Darren and he was up to third after the first corner. The race pace was furious and although he was able to stay with the leaders he was unable to pass so he sat tight in the knowledge that the Young Driver AMR team always delivers in the pits.
"The guys excelled themselves again," he said. "I came in to hand over to Tomas and a slick stop meant that he joined the race in second place."
Everything was looking good for a podium finish but Tomas began to suffer with tyre wear that left him unable to defend his position and he dropped back to tenth before the chequered flag.
"It's a shame we couldn't finish on the podium," said Darren. "Tomas was on old tyres and once they had gone past the point of no return there was nothing he could do. The good news though is that we lose all of our success ballast so we can go to Navarra to compete for victory again."
