Derbyshire's big adventure moves to Spain

Jamie Derbyshire will be driving the Spirit Volkswagen-backed Creation Autosportif Lister Storm in the second round of the FIA GT Championship in Valencia, Spain, this weekend.

The Briton is sharing the car with the 2000 FIA GT Champion, Jamie Campbell-Walter, and admits that he is on a steep learning curve.

"I have never seen the circuit before, so I will walk it on Thursday afternoon when I get there," he said. "I haven't a clue where the corners go at the moment, so I will have to learn it pretty quickly."

The FIA GT Championship is part of the LG Super Racing Weekend, incorporating the European Touring Car Championship and the Formula Renault V6 series.

It is the premier endurance racing series in Europe, with more than 250 accumulated hours of television coverage across the globe. The series has attracted Ferrari, Porsche, Saleen, Lister and this weekend the Lamborghini Murcielago is expected to make its race debut.

It is a big leap for locally-based Derbyshire, who has won nearly 80 per cent of his races during his career, but he is unfazed by the hype surrounding the international series. "The quick boys have all been around the block while I am new to most of these circuits," he says.

"Jamie Campbell-Walter has given me some helpful tips and that is speeding up the learning process. The meetings are big and impressive, and it is nice to be a part of it.

"I am not paying much attention to the fastest guys at the moment. I am just working with Jamie and doing my job. We know what we have to do, and I know what my role is within the team.

"I am driving against the likes of Formula One test driver Matteo Bobbi and Tom Coronel, but they have masses of experience while I am just at the start of the learning curve. Success at this level doesn't happen overnight."
